The
Experience

At the end of a long, long track, surrounded by ancient trees, is an impressive old farmhouse and a converted barn (three bedrooms and three bathrooms apiece), mellow in Gascony stone. They sit in over seven acres of garden and forest (child heaven), with rose garden, vines, orchard, pond, hedgerows, stream, views and a pool sunk into the grass. Inside, beautiful oak beams and stone and terracotta floors remain, complemented by 21st century comforts, from wifi (in the farmhouse) to TV to super showers. Each gite spreads over two floors with steps a-go-go (no under fives please). Feel the history within these old stone walls; families cannot help but unwind. Cook and chat in attractive kitchens, sink into well-cushioned sofas and chairs, snuggle by wood-burners with books and games, drift onto terraces, bask under parasols then snooze away in cosy rug-clad rooms. Shop in Montcrabeau or head off for Lectoure and lovely old Nérac: Gascony’s markets are the best. Book farmhouse or barn – or take the whole lot!

Reviews

A long overdue review......this fantastic house is open and airy making for a most inviting atmosphere. Gardens are beautifully landscaped and well tended. A most comfortable and charming house, the perfect place to enjoy this beautiful region of France.

Jacquelyn, Madrid

We had the most fantastic two weeks here. My father rented Bouchon Bas and my husband and I and our two children were in Bouchon Haut. It was the most memorable holiday and we wanted for nothing. The pool is fabulous and now has a fence round it so we weren't worried at all when our children went exploring round the garden. The table tennis was brilliant entertainment. The house itself is beautifully decorated and spacious. We loved eating outside on the long table and watching the sun set surrounded by sunflower fields. It really is a find this place and we would be back in a heart beat.

Surrounded by sunflower fields Bouchon is sufficiently remote that you feel you've escaped from the real world but close enough to amazing attractions, sights & food markets. We stayed in Bouchon Bas and were really impressed - it is beautifully furnished and the living area in particular is stunning. The kitchen is also well equipped with all modern conveniences yet maintains a rustic appeal. We have small children and they had endless hours of fun roaming the beautiful grounds. All in all everything had been thought of to make our stay a comfortable one and we will definitely be returning.

We had a wonderful week. Beautiful properties, set in amazing countryside. We enjoyed swimming in the pool and visiting the local markets. We all came back refreshed and we would love to visit again.

Tracy, London

A perfect luxurious home from home. Stunning immaculate house, inside and out, beautiful huge pool, extensive gardens and sweeping views of glorious countryside. The perfect holiday.

There are not enough superlatives to describe Bouchon Haut. Approached by a long, winding drive, through fields of wheat and sunflowers, Bouchon Haut is surrounded by beautiful gardens filled with lavender. The house is exquisite, the character of the stunning stone building, has been perfectly enhanced by an enticing mixture of antique furniture, sumptuous fabrics and state of the art technology. If you want to stay in a beautiful tranquil location, in a gorgeous property with exquisite interiors, a terrace to die for and a fabulous pool, you would be mad to miss a stay at beautiful Bouchon.

Cherrie, Bungay, suffolk

Lovely mellow stone buildings, a beautifully kept garden full of lavender and bees and a swimming pool in fields of sunflowers. Perfect for two families as you share this generous space. Shops, restaurants and castles are all a drive away through a painterly landscape. We loved it.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Nick Butler

  • Bouchon is perfectly situated within a 15 minute drive of the historic riverside market towns of Condom and Nérac, with excellent local farmers markets, restaurants, shops, music festivals and concerts.
  • Lectoure, a Roman hilltop garrison town is a must-see with several fascinating museums, galleries and buildings. The beautiful medieval villages of Fources, Larrasingle and La Romieu are also all close by.
  • Mézin (10 minutes’ drive) has excellent local bakers, butchers, grocers and a couple of lovely cafes on the square where you can sit out and watch the world go by.
  • The sleepy pretty little village of Moncrabeau is 5 minutes away and offers a good outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts.
  • One can rent a boat for the day and explore the villages along the river, or go canoeing, horseback riding, or searching for antiques and collectables in the local flea-markets and antique shops.
  • There are many restaurants serving regional specialties, and there is always a nearby village fete to enjoy – or just enjoy the tranquillity of Bouchon and French rural life.
