The Experience

It is rare indeed to visit an empty house in midwinter and experience an instant warmth that brings the place to life. Your French/German hosts – Valérie and Frank – come from the world of performing arts (she a dance choreographer, he a set designer) and have now turned their attention to viticulture and making your stay special; they have the gift of hospitality tenfold, leave you cherries and walnuts (in season!) and love to share their passion for producing organic wine. Your space? A beautifully renovated, 400-year-old ochre-washed ‘pigeonnier’ with a sun-drenched terrace on an idyllic old farm among vines, a five-minute walk from the village. Step through a glazed door to a stylish yet cosy vaulted and beamed living room with a cool stone floor, minimal high-quality furniture and old walls. The kitchen is simple, the bedroom is fresh and light, and there are single beds on the mezzanine. There’s a pool to dunk in (yours from 10am to 6pm), Saint Émilion is close, the beaches of Arcachon and the boulevards of Bordeaux are an easy drive, and in summer Castillon gives a re-enactment of the last battle of the Hundred Years War.

Reviews

A very peaceful and relaxing place to stay. Valerie and Frank are perfect hosts - helpful and generous without being intrusive. Good bakeries and groceries in Castilon which is 5 miles away (very flat to cycle) A well equipped kitchen in the house - everything we needed to cook for ourselves most evenings. Bordeaux easy by train from castillon. The pool is heavenly!

We had a very enjoyable fortnight at Le Pigeonnier. The photos do not really do justice to what a delightful setting it is — the warm colours of the dovecote stonework, the encroaching vines, the well-maintained grounds (in full flower), the quietness. Valérie and Frank were charming hosts, very responsive when needed but otherwise unobtrusive. There is little in Flaujagues except a good restaurant, but provisions are only a short drive away in Gensac. The small wineries in the Entre-Deux-Mers region are worth seeking out. All up, a great experience and not a thing to fault!

Our fortnight at Le Pigeonnier was glorious. We loved the place, the pool and above all, the people. With their warmth and unobtrusive hospitality, Valerie and Frank simply couldn't have made us feel more welcome. St Emilion and Bergerac are within easy striking distance and beautiful Bordeaux just a short train ride away. (Park free of charge at the station in Castillon!) It's also a great place to recharge your batteries. We had a couple of really relaxing stay-put days where we sploshed in the pool, watched the sun set spectacularly and sat under the stars by night. Just perfect!

We absolutely loved our time here. The house and setting were just perfect for our young family. The kids loved the pool and playing among the vines. Valérie and Frank were the most amazing hosts who made us feel most welcome. Will definitely be doing a return trip in the future.

Le Pigeonnier is beautiful accommodation in a truly stunning location. A warm welcome awaits, and Valerie and Frank are the perfect hosts. The gite has everything you need for a very comfortable stay, with the pool providing the final notes of luxury. There is so much lovely wine to taste in the area, including the very fine organic wine produced by Valerie and Frank.

A spacious comfortable house with a private terrace adjacent to and with a view of the vineyard - 100% privacy - beautiful swimming pool - very nice quiet area - the owners Frank and Valerie, who live next door, are very nice friendly people and you feel because of them really at home. This lodging is a real winner .. highly recommended for those who love peace, beauty and nature!

Imagine this: Having breakfast in the morning, overlooking the vineyard of the owner, and hearing nothing except the songs of birds... That's only the start of the day if you're staying in "Le Pigeonnier", a small but lovely cottage off the beaten track. Situated in the very quiet town of Flaujagues, surrounded by hundreds of winehouses (Chateaux) in the Bordeaux region, it is a perfect starting point to explore the region. Very nice and affordable restaurants closeby, but if you decide to cook yourself, you will find regional products in neighbouring towns or the hypermarket...

What a stunning location amongst the vineyards! We loved le Pigeonnier - so characterful, and also very comfortable. Great walks in the area, including one directly from the Pigeonnier. Perfect base for wine-tasting and sightseeing and we found some wonderful restaurants within easy distance. Relaxing by the beautiful pool in the afternoon was bliss!

Le Pigeonnier is an idyllic countryside retreat. The setting amidst the vines couldn't be more beautiful, the pool is delightful and the house is well equipped and stays nice and cool even on hot days. We did the trip without a car and managed perfectly well as we mostly wanted to relax rather than do lots of sightseeing. Frank kindly picked us up from Castillon (you can also book a taxi) and there are two bikes you can borrow to get to, for example, the lovely swimming lake that is about 20 minutes' ride away.

Where do we start? If you are looking for a little corner of "paradise" with your feet IN the vineyard surrounded by peace and tranquility, then Le Pigeonnier does tick all those boxes. Not only can you get fresh eggs from the friendly and entertaining roaming hens but you will never fall short of a good organic red as supply by the owners' own brand is at hand. We have seen may places in France and we must say that the region is fabulous and Le Pigeonnier is a comfortable and ideally located starting point to explore the lovely surroundings with easy access to all facilities.

Tranquil setting, providing the perfect first week for our holiday. The gite is very comfortable with a small but very well equipped kitchen. We loved sitting on the patio and looking across the vineyard. The children enjoyed having access to the swimming pool which is so clean and well cared for. We spent several days at Lac de la Cadie which is perfect for children wanting to enjoy paddle boarding and swimming in open water. We enjoyed a wander round Saint Emilion and a trip to the beach just south of Aracachon. Valerie is a wonderful host and so wanted us to enjoy our stay.

Le Pigeonnier is in a wonderful peaceful location close to the river and surrounded by grape vines, yet within an hour of Bordeaux and the sights of the Dordogne. The interior is simple, with a well-equipped kitchen, and the private garden and (shared) pool are just dreamy. Valérie was a very kind host, available to answer any questions and to recommend some of the many wonderful places to eat and drink nearby (including an excellent riverside pizzeria just 5 minutes’ drive away). The perfect location for countryside, coast and culture.

My family and I stayed a week with Valerie and Frank in their lovely gite, Le Pigeonnier. The setting was idyllic and the house was lovely! On top Valerie is absolutely lovely and very helpful (we didn’t see much of Frank as I think he was busy working)! Their wine is also a very nice glass and organic to boot!! We also very much enjoyed the pool and the tranquility. I have to admit that we loved the region too and we did plenty of cycling! If you get the chance go and visit the Chateau Le Castellet in saint Emilion as the wine is to die for! Ask for Patrick as he is great!!

Toby, London

Le Pigeonnier is a lovely, peaceful and relaxing to stay - we had a most enjoyable week! Very clean, high quality and tastefully decorated. Each day we ate all our meals outside on the terrace with views of the vineyards (often joined by a very friendly hen sitting quietly beside the table)! Lovely warm swimming pool to enjoy with views of the sunset. Valerie was very friendly, helpful and welcoming - and we enjoyed their delicious organic wine too! We returned refreshed and totally relaxed. Thoroughly recommend!!

Frances, Derby

We really enjoyed our stay at le Pigeonnier. How lovely to be among the vines and sample the delicious wine. The property is very private with a fabulous terrace for outside living. The pool is excellent and very relaxing. The owners are so friendly and hospitable and it was a delight to stay in their property. We would recommend.

Sue, Leeds

Thepigeonnier is great find ,the photos do not do the property justice . It well decorated and everything is on hand that you need . Valerie and Frank are great hosts and make great wine also !

Stuart, Woburn

Le Pigeonnier is an excellent gite and its charming owners, Valerie and Frank, did everything possible to make our 2-week stay perfect. The gite is well-appointed and is in a beautifully peaceful vineyard location. A superb pool is shared with the owners. The patio has both sun and shade, so eating outside is a pleasure. Plenty of interesting places to visit in the area and good, reasonably-priced restaurants, especially at lunchtime. We highly recommend the gite.

John, NORTH KILWORTH

We had such a lovely holiday at Le Chalard - the sun shone, the pigeonnier was full of all we needed and the pool is fabulous. The vines all round the house are lovely to look at and the wine is excellent too! We had frequent visits from 2 chickens and a cockerel and a cat. Valerie was an excellent and warm host. Many thanks for a great week!

Charles, Lechlade

Lovely, peaceful rural setting...marvelous view through the vineyards to the distant hills. Valerie is wonderfully charming, extremely informative/efficient & incredibly helpful--she even assisted us with trying to charge our car when the battery failed & then called the tow truck. And she brought us fresh eggs, courtesy of her delightful chickens, Jurassic & The Twins! Enjoyed the expansive, private patio & swimming pool. All very clean & well-equipped. Comfy bed. "Country" WiFi allows more time to decompress & explore--beautiful St. Emilion is a short drive away. Mille mercis, Valerie!
