Your lovely hosts have converted their barn with a warm palette of ochres and yellows: it’s the kind of gîte they have often looked for in vain. Flooded with light, the living space feels big and airy and the décor is original, comfortable and unfussy. You’ll feel immediately at ease, ready to take a bottle of wine and a nibble from the welcome basket and relax on the terrace – or slide directly into the hot tub – with its long view of Dordogne countryside. On the other side, the courtyard garden makes an enchanting stonewalled suntrap; you’re surrounded by four acres of fenced grounds too – perfect if you wish to visit with your dog. Indoors, you have convivial sitting, eating and cooking spaces, all neat and pleasing with every kind of coffee-maker you could desire. The walk-in shower is generous, too. Up quite steep stairs (tall folk must mind their heads, but all will appreciate the views through the skylight of unpolluted starry night skies) find a mezzanine bedroom – not huge but with a king-size bed and a chest of drawers. Cycling, river sports, wine visits, fabulous markets and much historical beauty will entice you to explore.
