The
Experience

At the end of a drive curving through forest and field, Rupert and Franck have transformed a venerable farm into this blissful retreat. They live in the tobacco barn, near enough to help if you need their expertise. Your domain includes majestic Le Mas – the honey-hued stone farmhouse – and dinky cottage Le Mazet, ideal for couples with its open living space above cosy bedroom and bathroom. All this in 2.5 acres of green abundance: fruit trees, a sheltered ‘summer kitchen’ in an old barn, lavender and jasmine scenting the air and a hilltop pool with wonderful views. Inside Le Mas it’s all about stylish understatement, with white-washed walls forming the perfect foil for ancient beams and glimpses of that golden stone. There’s a cool and comfy open living room leading to huge kitchen where nothing is left to chance, from a milk frother to an immense table for 12. The discreet luxury continues in the bedrooms: white Egyptian cotton and down abound, with minimal fuss but maximum comfort. Bathrooms are snazzy too – free-standing baths, walk-in showers, and more towels than you’ll know what to do with.

Reviews

What a find! We have just returned from a magical week at Le Mas. Eight adults and a 10-month old baby gathered from across the globe to celebrate my 40th birthday and we couldn't have chosen a more perfect winter paradise. The house interiors have been beautifully designed with a sophisticated contemporary tone - often difficult to come across in rural France. Rupert and Franck have thought of EVERYTHING so all you need to do is show up, and relax! If you do wish to venture out, Rupert has you covered with A* recommendations for food, wine, massages, truffles hunting... Perfection.

Our best travel friends joined us at Le Mas late this spring. Though seasoned travelers all, they agreed with us that Le Mas was the finest blend of creature comforts, peaceful isolation and convenient location imaginable. Rupert and Franck were discrete hosts, but always available and eager to share their recommendations and enthusiasm for this, our favorite region of France. The house was impeccable, the kitchen expertly outfitted, and the renovations designed to balance gathering space and privacy for all. No detail was overlooked. We could not have asked for more.

I had a wonderful stay at Le Mas and Le Mazet. Rupert and Franck were friendly and accommodating hosts, and had many useful suggestions about what to do/where to eat in this richly interesting and historic region. The property itself was beautiful with a combination of scenic views and French style (the bathrooms were particularly modern). Everything was impeccably clean. Outside was equally pretty, with the pool (which was of perfect size for cooling off) looking over the hills where we routinely saw kestrels and butterflies. The thoughtful Summer Kitchen allowed us to make the most of this.

The house is beautifully restored and has everything you need, with a fully equipped kitchen, a large dining table and wonderful fire place for long evenings and good conversations. Also the summer kitchen and outdoor BBQ next to the the swimming pool are a delight and the the views all around are just stunning. Our room was huge and the spotlessly clean bathroom featured a wonderful shower, stylish bathtub, delicious soaps and fluffy towels. The bed was just heaven, even more luxurious than in some of the best hotels we have stayed in! We will definitely be back!

In the middle of the Dordogne countryside we stayed at this beautifully restored farmhouse. The two (charming) owners have put all their energy, love and taste into restoring the house into a luxurious place to stay. They have managed to keep many of the old elements of the house such as the big fireplace, the old beams and the sandstone walls that make the house extremely homely. The owners were very hospitable (without intruding in any way) and went out of their way to make our stay as memorable as possible. We made great hikes in the region. We will definitely return to this lovely place

We loved staying at Le Mas and wanted to say just how impressed we were with not just the property, views and location, but with your attention to detail and care with which you run it. It is so refreshing to find such a clean, beautifully designed and well equipped home to adopt for a week and a wonderful bonus to meet two such lovely guys at the same time. We honestly couldn't recommend Le Mas et Le Mazet with any greater candor.

Local points of interest from Rupert Springfield

  • The Daily Telegraph stayed here in October 2016 and has reviewed us with a score of 9/10 (go to our website, click on the Telegraph logo at the bottom of the page). The French Ministry of Tourism has awarded Le Mas with 5 stars, and Le Mazet with 4 stars
  • There is a great 30 minute walk from the house past a 12th century church with original wall paintings, through a wood to a ruined castle towering over a beautiful Dordogne village, ending at a restaurant serving drinks and delicious food.
  • We can arrange for a private chef to come and cook a fantastic French meal with local ingredients and wine, and his wife serves and clears up, so you don't have to!We also have a local baker deliver here every morning so you can stay longer in bed.
  • Le Mas & Le Mazet are between Monpazier and Beaumont, both beautiful bastide (fortified) towns built by Edward I of England. They have restaurants, shops, café terraces and artisan bakeries. In the summer there is a great night market at Beaumont
  • The garden is full of fruit trees which you are welcome to pluck and you'll find home-made jams and produce in your welcome pack. For fresh fruit and veg there are markets in the surrounding towns most days of the week.
  • Situated on top of a hill, the houses offer stunning uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside and the 12th century church, whose bells you can hear across the valley.
