The
Experience

A lovely, rustic and very personal space, full of light from big shuttered windows. If you like the sound of an old barn conversion full of the owners’ friendly ‘abilia then a stay here will be like slipping on a pair of well-loved gloves. Wonky stone walls, wooden floors and chunky beams frame a warmly inviting living room with a collection of hats and books, sofas and a wood-burning stove. Through the archway there’s a study area and stairs to the bedrooms that are also simple, comfortable and homely, with sloping ceilings, brocante furniture and flowery curtains at floor-level windows. The cosy master bedroom has a wrought iron bed; the second room a single with a pull-out bed underneath. The shower room’s downstairs, along with the more modern kitchen extension. Sheena’s a keen cook so there’s plenty of good kit. Double doors lead to the big garden, full of wildlife, with table and chairs under the spreading chestnut tree; pasture and riding school beyond. So, handy for riding, walking and cycling in the Périgord Limousin National Park, and for the best bakery in the area in Milhac de Nontron. Limoges 45 minutes.

Reviews

La Noisette was the perfect place to relax and unwind. It was comfortable and very well equipped and did not disappoint in terms of character. Being very dog friendly, the garden was a great size and there were lovely woodland walks right on the doorstep. The village provided just the level of peace and quiet we were hoping for in a nice rural setting, but close enough to amenities. The patisserie in Milhac is not to be missed. The owners James and Sheena were extremely helpful, providing us with all the pre- trip information we needed to make things go smoothly and ensuring a great trip.

What a week! Weather mixed but didn’t stop us enjoying this beautiful region of France . Lovely holiday cottage with such a homely feel we didn’t want to leave! Everything you need is at hand in this home so just bring yourselves . Our puppy had the best time ever as National Park on your doorstep. Loads of places to visit within an hours drive. Owners so helpful and friendly nothing too much trouble. Trust me you’ll enjoy

Lovely little place surrounded by flowery meadows and wildlife galore! Very well equipped, but charming too. St Jean de Cole is a treat to visit. The weather let us down but the house certainly didn't.

We had a wonderful week at La Noisette. The house is lovely and well equipped, and the garden was fantastic - perfect for us and our energetic puppy! The setting was just what we wanted - peaceful, with beautiful walks and bike rides, and great for exploring the area. James and Sheena were helpful, polite and easy to deal with. We had such a lovely time, and I'm sure we'll be back.

Lovely place, in a peaceful location and area. Very helpful owners and we enjoyed a super break. Exactly as described, and very dog-friendly too. Highly recommended.

Mark, Andover

A lovely calm and relaxing country house on a quiet lane, it was perfect for walks in the forest with our dogs, enjoying the sun in the garden in the good weather and reading in the costy sitting room in the evenings. A great base with plenty of places to see nearby.

Gerry, Dublin

We had a lovely time at La Noisette. The location is peaceful, the huge tree in the garden provides a lovely backdrop for lazy summer days, and you're just a short drive from some of the region's lovely places to visit. We hope to go again soon in the future.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from James Willis

  • La Noisette lies 4 km from the village of Milhac de Nontron: village shop, church, post office, and a superb baker / pâtissier. Local St Pardoux la Rivière has a wider range of shops, a bank with ATM, a good restaurant with terrace, and a pizzeria
  • 'Welcome Pack' on arrival (wine, bread, milk, eggs). Riding-school, across the field; bathing lake with café ten minutes away at St Saud Lacoussiere. Pretty St Jean de Côle, with its fine Romanesque church and château, cafés and Tourist Office, is nearby.
  • At Champagnac de Belair (15 mins) there is an excellent restaurant, Moulin du Roc, in a delightful riverside setting. Lunch on the terrace highly recommended (booking essential). Sensational (if pricey!) wine list.
  • Enchanting Brantôme (elegantly straddling the River Dronne, hence known as the ‘Venice of the Dordogne’), with its ancient abbey, its restaurants and antique shops, can be reached in about twenty minutes. Canoeing (optional!) plus lunch!
  • Among many local attractions are the châteaux of Puyguilhem, Bourdeilles and Jumilhac-le-Grand; a little further afield, the spiralling towns of Aubeterre and Uzerche and the château and National Stud at Pompadour.
  • La Noisette lies within the Parc Naturel, there are many walking trails (the house lies beside one) and a wealth of animal and bird life. On balmy evenings a family of Little Owls will visit you as you dine in the garden.
