The
Experience

White walls, pale oak floors, peace – city chic in country calm. This 19th-century property, rigorously renovated by the owners to meld original features to modern spaces, is an old monastic site. They live across the courtyard in the main house (where the abbot’s house was), ever ready with help and local lore. The open-plan living area covers the ground floor: quarry tiles, a grand fireplace, antique furnishings, underfloor heating. At one end, the smart convivial kitchen is a cook’s delight. Bedrooms are bright, uncluttered spaces of oak boards and sandblasted beams; high-class bathrooms have robes and locally made toiletries. Bring well-behaved friends and you can rent the vast attic suite in the main house: two beamed bedrooms, antique furniture, claw-foot baths, and a soaring loft space scattered with rugs and comfy sofas. The garden has several dozen well-established trees, a dining terrace and a heated saltwater pool (in season) with a shower. You are well-placed for exploring the Dordogne, the vineyards of Saint Émilion and pretty riverside Brantôme.

Reviews

We had a very enjoyable stay here. The weather was not very warm but the house was cosy, and it made us explore the area, going as far as St Emilion and down to Perigeux. The gite is extremely well equipped and very comfortable. Considerable thought had been given to all the small details including the welcome pack. The local town of Brantome caters for all your culinary needs, good restaurants, market and supermarkets. The owners were very hospitable and helped us make the most our time there. Can strongly recommend this property.

My family and I, including two young children had a lovely restful holiday here. Well positioned close to excellent market towns and villages, the cottage offers home-from-home comfort with white company bedding and soft towels which are replaced when needed. The cottage is extremely clean and well maintained. We found Sally to be a perfect host - even popping our supper in the oven as we arrived late on the first day! The cottage is next to a farm, so the cows do make a noise sometimes, but this just gave us an excuse to drink more wine in the evening. A really lovely holiday.

We had a wonderful week in this beautifully furnished, immaculately clean cottage. Exclusive access to the swimming pool was fabulous and when the children were not in the pool, they were either playing table tennis or talking to the cows from the farm next door! The white company bedding, towels and dressing gowns was a wonderful addition and the master bed was the comfiest of any rental property we have stayed in. Sally and Christopher are fabulous hosts. Would certainly recommend.

We stayed here for two weeks with two good friends and had a wonderful holiday. The accommodation was spacious and spotless, the location peaceful and the weather very good ensuring the pool was in regular use. Very nice to have a shaded area next to the pool and a changing room, as well as a courtyard to play boules. Sally and Christopher(John) supplemented the ample supply of books and leaflets with current information on restaurants and places to visit and were very friendly and helpful. Brantome and Riberac were close and visited often.

We have just returned from our third visit to la Chatreuse. We have been to other places in between but nowhere as good as this for cleanliness, comfort, elegance and tranquility with a pool that is perfect for a hot day. Surrounded by true rural beauty and with a warm welcome from Sally and Christopher a stay here is an absolute delight. In our view unbeatable. We shall certainly return.

A beautiful gite in a beautiful setting. Well appointed gite with an excellent large pool set in rolling countryside. Table tennis and boules were good fun and helped work up an appetite for eating on the terrace.

This is a fantastic holiday cottage; beautifully furnished, immaculately clean and with linen that ensures you have the most comfortable of stays. The pool is perfect for adults and children and we had a lovely week. The owners could not be more attentive but are careful to maintain your privacy. It is a lovely cottage, ideal for those looking for a quiet, relaxing week away from it all but also is a great spot for days trips to many local towns and nearby attractions. The strongest possible recommendation.

Max, Nottingham

Lovely house, lovely pool and peaceful surroundings supplemented by very helpful and accommodating hosts. Plenty to see and eat within an easy drive. The house had a good mix of modern facilities and antique furniture and paintings and felt very welcoming. It was spotlessly clean. The pool was beautifully maintained and situated on a terrace. We had a lovely holiday - thanks Sally and Christopher.

La Chartreuse is a slice of heaven far from the madding crowd. Sally and Christopher have laid the gite out beautifully, it is well positioned and been furnished immaculately. On top of the essentials one needs for a self catering holiday there are the touches of luxury such as The White Company dressing gowns, the locally sourced soaps and the high end retail furnishings. Above all, the level of cleanliness and overall attention to detail have made us feel like we were the first people to have stayed here. I am sure the people who follow us will feel exactly the same

Richard

Each year we visit La Chartreuse and it is the best of the many places we have stayed in France. It is immaculate, with comfortable beds . It has a very well equipped kitchen, comfortable sitting area and is in a delightful location. The pool is heated to 27 degrees and well tended and equipped with sun loungers. The charming town of Brantome is a short drive away. The owners are most charming and helpful hosts.

Sheila/clive

With exclusive access to a beautiful pool, comfortable beds, tasteful decor, spotlessly clean surroundings and a kitchen with everything you could need, what more could you ask for. With the addition of friendly, helpful and knowledgeable host, this makes for a perfect holiday retreat.

Andrew

A tranquil place with gracious surroundings. A beautiful pool for private use with views over fields edged with shimmering poplars. Musical twilights filled with the song of frogs and crickets. A lovely place to spend time together. Sally and Christopher are kind hosts.
