The
Experience

The Frenchest of châteaux for culture vultures and foodies, history buffs and hedonists. La Meynardie has always been a grand country residence in a breath-taking setting. The three Parisian sisters who inherited it love its authentic, well-loved atmosphere and come whenever they can. The superb reception rooms are fit for a duchess’s soirée: yards of original beams and Versailles parquet speak of 17th-century elegance, fine period sideboards behind comfy sofas – where new fabrics have seamlessly replaced the old. Or curl up in the snug petit salon. The fully-equipped kitchen, smallish by comparison, gives onto the dining room. Up the impressive staircase, above the grand dining and drawing rooms, bedrooms are comfortably un-posh with favourite ornaments and cuddlies – nothing too fragile; big modern bathrooms are family-friendly and untouched by designer flourishes. Outside, a genuine French-style formal park with a huge ornamental basin takes you to the Orangerie for extra bedrooms and the big swimming pool and tennis court, artfully hidden by a hedge. Beyond are truffles, painted caves, castles, Romanesque churches…

Local points of interest from Odile Polette-Compain

  • Périgord is rich in castles, abbeys, and caves, after years we still haven't seen everything! We will give you a selection of "must see" for example the fabulous Jumilhac castle (10 mins) is said to have inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle.
  • La Meynardie has a park planted with hundred-year-old linden trees. When they embalm in Spring, the air has a sweet, honeyed scent, conducive to naps. Lounge under their branches with a good book, happiness is really at your fingertips!
  • We particularly like, in the spring & summer, to enjoy the vegetable garden with the children. Your meals can be picked, a joy for the little ones - the scent of basil, or the flavour of raspberry! The delicious zucchini flowers can be fried for aperitifs.
  • In all seasons, the surroundings of La Meynardie are rich of beautiful walks, on foot or by bike. We will be happy to share with you our favorite itineraries, and of course, we offer many bicycles, for young and old.
  • For the "bon vivants", Périgord is the region of the most famous gastronomy in France. Foie gras, truffles, porcini mushrooms, the wines of Bordeaux. Local markets, small restaurants or big tables, the truffle fields, you can go on a gourmet circuit.
  • On your bucket list! Every morning, the same dilemma: enjoy the castle, park, pool, tennis? Or visit castles, restaurants? Or go for walks? Do nothing? But every morning open the shutters to see infinite nature and time suspended
