St Bartelemy de Bellegarde, Dordogne

A saltwater pool to plunge in, National Park trails to explore - take a cookery course using wood-fired ovens for a real taste of France

2 places

Sleeping from 4 – 6

The Marshall’s plan is for three bright, family-friendly gîtes in the 19th-century barn alongside their deeply rural Dordogne home. Things are shaping up nicely: Cepe and Sanglier are ready now, Cerf will be available from spring 2019. Annette – who couldn’t be more helpful and is on hand to advise – has created very attractive, practical holiday spaces that are rustic in parts with chunky old beams, apparent stone and brick, and have all the right creature comforts: beautiful new beds and cashmere-filled sprung mattresses. Well kitted out kitchens and bathrooms, including a double-ended bath for two to slip into. Furniture is clean-lined and comfortable: a SW England meets SW France mix. Solar panels heat water, chickens and goats will strut the orchard. And landscaping is underway to make the most of the already lovely setting; each gîte will have its own path to the sunny, saltwater pool area, and its own pool furniture. Take time to stand and stare at the stars, listen to the birds, explore the surrounding forest and visit Périgord’s markets and castles; you can sign up too for a cookery course using wood-fired ovens.

From start to finish, this is one of the most lovely places that we have ever stayed. An attention to small detail both in the apartment and in the grounds which was so very appreciated. We are family with 3 children and Annette's gîte catered wonderfully for all of us. The place's calm atmosphere is heightened by an undertone of unpretentious luxury that we delighted in. We would love to return, can't recommend it more warmly.

Thank you Rural Gites for such a lovely relaxing stay at Chadenne - such a beautiful setting. We had lots of fun at the house and in the surrounding areas. Tennis courts at the Centre of Tennis and multisport were a great find. We wil be back and looking forward to exploring more of the area. We loved the wildlife , the amazing skies and the peace and quiet (although we may have disrupted that!!) and of course, the food and wine. Thank you so much for sharing Chadenne with us.

Thank you so much Rural Gites for such a fabulous week. We loved everything from lazing by the pool to visiting Castle Beynac. The visit to Issigeac is a MUST. We look forward to returning and continuing the volley ball championship!

Definitely the first but not the last time we visit. Great place, great hosts and area. Enjoy! Thank you Rural Gites what a lovely place to be, the pool is great and the living space is so nice. I am looking forward to my next visit.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Annette Marshall

  • The ancient Foret de La Double is brimming with flora, fauna and places for walking and cycling. The national park La Jemaye is only 20 minutes away and is a popular place for families to spend the day
  • At night the skies are incredibly dark - you can sit outside with some hot chocolate and watch shooting stars, the Mily Way appear and try to guess where the satellites are travelling to and from.
  • Rural Gites is a small family run holiday business with a discreet resident owner who is more than happy to help make your holiday special
  • This quieter part of the Dordogne is away from the madding crowds but close to St Emilion, Aubeterre sur Dronne and Perigueux with their beautiful ancient monuments and the valleys of the Rivers Dronne and L'Isle for canoeing and cycling along.
  • The site is rural and with that comes the tranquillity and calm required for a lovely away from it all holiday in a stylish environment
  • The gardens are designed by Jill Foxley, RHS gold medal winner, who is in the process of creating a family friendly beautiful garden for guests and a working garden for the owners
