With a lawn sloping down to a Wendy house (child heaven) and green fields to the sides is a gabled villa with a grand porch and bay windows, built in 1840 for the estate manager. Today’s friendly owners live in the servants’ quarters, entrusting the rest to guests. Downstairs is a sun-filled sitting room, a smart kitchen-diner, and a dramatic tiled hall that runs from front to back with heaps of space for walking sticks and wellies (Offa’s Dyke and the Shropshire Way await!). Upstairs: a bathroom half way up and smart bedrooms above (two en suite). Comfy sofas gather round an open fire and logs are on the house, the kitchen has lovely waxed floors and an American style fridge, the beds and the bedding are fresh and bright, and the views are Shropshire’s sweetest. Jemma leaves you homemade granola, bread and compote for first breakfast, and will deliver delicious meals if you’d like them. Visit castles at Ludlow, Hopton and Clun, shop and eat in Knighton, jump on the Heart of Wales line: Bucknell – with its request stop – is just behind.
