The
Experience
The position here is magical: an ancient stone bridge, a river snaking through the valley, glorious hills rising beyond, cows grazing in lush fields. It’s a perfect spot, not least because providence blessed it with this chic little inn. Inside, you find a locals’ bar for the odd game of rugby, sofas in front of a wood-burner in the sitting room, then an airy restaurant for some very good food. In summer, doors fly open and life spills onto a stone terrace with views of hill and wood – a fine spot for lunch in the sun. Elegant country-house bedrooms brim with light. Some are beamed, most are big, you’ll find padded bedheads, Farrow & Ball colours, perhaps a walnut bed or a claw-foot bath in your room. Those at the front have river views, those at the back look onto the hills, some have sofas, all have robes in excellent bathrooms. Seven circular walks start at the front door with maps to show you the way. Delicious food awaits your return, perhaps Welsh rarebit with a poached egg, braised beef brisket with dauphinoise potatoes, apple doughnuts with toffee sauce and mulled cider.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Paula Snow
- The village of Skenfrith has its own Norman Castle and an historic medieval church St. Bridget's. The Bell is just outside the village on the banks of the River Monnow which provides great riverside walking and further upstream fantastic fishing.
- The Bell has created 7 circular walks all of which start and finish at the inn. All have points of interest, maps and detailed instructions and drawings. The Dog and Boot Bar welcomes all dogs and owners with or without wellies. Dog parlour available.
- Walking is a favourite pastime of many guests but cycling and open-top motoring are others. The roads are quiet and wind through some of the country's most beautiful scenery. There are many beautiful gardens to visit in this part of Wales
- The Bell has a ghillie who can organise fishing trips in and around the area. Contact Reception for further details and how to apply for fishing licences. Monnow Events is close and great for stag and hen weekends with parties back at The Bell
- There are so many places to visit nearby that it is impossible to name them all. We are within easy reach of Hereford Cathedral which houses the Mappa Mundi and a signed Magna Carta. There are Marches castles and abbeys and Hay-on-Wye is 40 mins away.
- The Bell is the perfect place for an elegant wedding and blessings may be organised in the medieval church of St. Bridget's. We now have our own marquee set within our very pretty garden which provides the perfect backdrop for a special day and photos.
