Surrounded by 30 private acres and the vast forests of mid-Wales is this wonderfully out-of-the-way spot. Two tranquil lakes lie alongside you and the ruins of Talley Abbey are visible from each property. The low barn from which the cottages have been created is long, pleasing and sturdily built, and the ground floors are open plan with bedrooms and bathrooms above (Heron – sleeps eight – has one bedroom up; bathrooms up and down). All feels simple, spotless and traditional; wood-burners and open fires keep you snug. Welcoming Cristina and Matt live with their young son next door and want families to feel at home, so furniture is a charming mix of old and new, kitchens hold all you need, bathrooms are freshly painted. Outside it’s a paradise for kids: football in the field and a communal barbecue for summer. You can fish on the lake, gawp at the wildlife – otters, buzzards, red kites – twitchers will love the bird hide; eat and shop well in arty Llandeilo, seven miles. A guaranteed rural (but not too secluded) year-round escape.
