The Experience

You feel relaxed the moment you’ve pulled off your wellies in the little rustic porch (draped with, you’ve guessed it, roses in summer) and stepped inside this neat-as-a-pin stone cottage on the sprawling Dunalastair Estate.

You’ll find a  tray of tea and Border biscuits on the table – soak up the warmth from the kitchen’s Rayburn as you check out the other welcome goodies. The light, clean, practical decor is comfortable rather than showy, ideal for children; bad weather boredom can be kept at bay with games, books and satellite TV.

Climb Schiehallion Mountain, one of the easier Munros which stands proud within sight of the cottage; enjoy a game of tennis (rackets and balls provided); head off on estate walks right from the door – through fields of cattle and sheep and edging the Dunalastiar Loch, where you can fish for trout for free. By day keep a look out for deer and red squirrels, and eagles swooping overhead; at night the lack of light pollution means the stars are magical when skies are clear.

Reviews

Rose Cottage exceeded our expectations. A beautiful cottage set in a beautiful garden in a beautiful part of Scotland. We relaxed and had a brilliant holiday. Thanks to the Dunalastair Estate Team.

Kathryn, Worthing

The cottage affords cosy comfort in the perfect location for exploring the Loch Rannoch area. Situated adjacent to a working farm, we found the neighbours friendly and the lambs and calves were a daily entertainment in the surrounding fields. We loved our stay and would highly recommend the cottage as the perfect getaway.

Jane, Clackmannanshire

This cottage invites you to pull on your boots, turn off your phone and head out of the door to explore the wild woods and waters nearby and the river, lochs, hills and majestic mountains beyond. Come back and relax in the warmth of this snug highland hideaway.

Location

The neighbourhood

Surrounded by lochs and mountains in the glen of Rannoch in Highland Perthshire, Rose Cottage is set in the Dunalastair Estate - a large, working far with cows, sheep, fishing and forestry. The nearest village is Kinloch Rannoch, around three miles away, with a general store, two hotels with restaurants, the Riverbank Cafe for cakes, breakfast and lunch, and the Shed Gallery. Walk/cycle the ancient Black Wood of Loch Rannoch trail, 10 minutes away, or enjoy a boat ride on the water; there’s salmon fishing on the Tay or Garry, Blair Castle to visit and don't miss Pitlochry Festival Theatre if you want some culture (all 30 or 40 minutes away).

Local points of interest from Rose La Terriere

  • Enjoy the peace of Rannoch's unspoilt glen with forests, hills and lochs to explore on foot or by bike, or you can take the Clan Trail around Loch Rannoch and learn fascinating histories of the local clans. The location for Outlander's Stones are here too!
  • Highland Exploration runs Landrover safaris in the hills with a knowledgeable guide to tell you about the fascinating wildlife and amazing history. You can hire bikes from the local Loch Rannoch Hotel.
  • Blair Castle is a short drive away and visits to wonderful gardens open to the public in Perthshire are a joy. If culture is your thing, then the famous Pitlochry Festival Theatre is the place to go. And there are several distilleries within easy reach.
  • Highland Perthshire is the well-known centre for all types of sporting activities such as bungee jumping, white water rafting, canyoning, kayaking, horseriding and much more.
  • The estate is a bird-watcher's paradise with red grouse, black grouse, osprey, eagles, golden plovers, curlews, hen harriers to name a few. There are red squirrels, pine marten, red and roe deer, otters and much more besides. Binoculars provided.
  • If fishing is what you enjoy, you can fish for trout on the loch or river that runs through the estate for free in season. There is sometimes stalking available. A tennis court with rackets and balls is available too.

Introducing

Rose La Terriere

Originally the seat of the Roberston clan, Dunalastair Estate has been in the La Terriere family since 1891 and holiday cottages on the estate have been rented out successfully since the 70s. Generations of families have been coming here for years - returning grandchildren of our original visitors with their children. There's a full team to keep the estate running smoothly, including a farm manager, shepherd, gamekeeper and wildlife manager, maintenance team and Beatrice, who looks after the holiday cottages. A member of the team will pop in on the first evening to make sure everything's ok.
