Sleeps 8

A little bit of Surrey hits the Highlands here, in a no-expense-spared house with lots of treats and masses of space indoors and out. Hike along the Strathspey Way – it’s an hour or two to Aviemore, and then get the steam train back. Salmon fishing on the Spey will cost you £45 for a day’s permit; borrow two bikes from the garage, return with muddy boots and dogs and there’s a separate utility room for hosing down. This is a family house, with a wonderful flow in the design. Children will love running around in circles from hall to living room, out the other door and back to the hall. Books are arranged into cookery, maps, guidebooks; board games and televisions are many and the wood-burning stove belts out the heat. It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas but any family holiday will do, or a group of grown-up friends. French windows open onto a large terrace with a second dining table for summer eating facing the wonderful views. The master bedroom has its own west-facing terrace for escaping with a sundowner, and you’ll find everything from hot chocolate and marshmallows to prosecco and Cairngorm Brewery beer waiting for you.

We had a fantastic few days staying at the lodge, which offers a great location to get out and explore everything the Cairngorms has to offer. The lodge itself is set within beautiful surroundings and an ideal base to come back and relax, after spending a few hours up the mountains. Every room is spacious and finished to the highest standard, with also being able to enjoy the stunning views from the balcony over breakfast/dinner.

A fabulous base just outside of Aviemore. Extremely comfortable and stylishly decorated and very spacious for big groups or families. Could not recommend highly enough!

Neil, Glasgow

Everything about our visit was 5 Star. The attention to detail within the lodge was extraordinary. From a beautiful and thoughtful welcome 'hamper' on our arrival to well stocked firewood for the wood burning stove, beautiful and tasteful paintings and furnishings throughout, games and activities for our 3 children to play with when the weather was less favourable....I could go on and on.....! Hope to be back soon!

The neighbourhood

You're bang in the Cairngorms for fabulous hiking; there's good pony trekking round here too, and swimming in Lochinhully club pool in Carrbridge, two miles away. Take the Cairngorm funicular railway for a circular ride with spectacular views from the top. Carrbridge has a post office and Spar with basics, there's also The Old Bakery for coffee and homemade cakes.

Local points of interest from Andrew McDonald

  • Strathspey Lodge is conveniently located, within 15 minutes of Aviemore, the 'outdoors capital' of the Cairngorms with a vast range of outdoor shops as well as bars and restaurants and guaranteed Highland hospitality!
  • You can visit Dalwhinnie Distillery, a five star Visit Scotland attraction. Set in stunning mountain scenery in the heart of the Cairngorms, the distillery is Scotland's highest at 1164 ft.
  • Nearby is the Landmark Forest Adventure Park. An adventure for the whole family, with treetop fun, a family friendly roller coaster, a tropical hot house filled with butterflies and exotic flowers, to name a few of the activities.
  • Visit the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, Britain's only free-ranging herd. Currently numbering c150, mostly ranging on the Cairngorm Mountains with the remainder on the Glenlivet Estate. There are planned daily guided visits to the Herd.
  • With its stunning scenery, it's hard to think of a better backdrop for golf courses! The National Park is home to 12 courses. Strathspey Lodge is the perfect base to visit other world class courses such as Royal Dornoch and Nairn.
  • Visit the nearby Rothiermurchus estate, 10,000 hectares of Ancient Caledonian Forest, Lochs, Rivers, Glens, Mountains, and wild landscapes. Amazing farm food, or the more adventurous can fish, shoot, quad bike all in stunning scenery.

Andrew, a surveyor, and his teacher wife Catherine live in Surrey – this is the family holiday home, which they visit as often as possible. They are keen mountaineers and enjoy hiking in the glorious Cairngorms, and they hope you will get as much pleasure from the house and its surroundings as they do.
