The Experience

This beautiful Scottish-Georgian family home has not a hint of formality, and sociable Willie puts you at your ease. Your sitting and dining rooms connect through a large arch; find gloriously comfy sofas, family pictures, rugs on wooden floors, masses of books and a constant log fire. Upstairs: good linen, striped walls, armchairs and windows with views – this wonderful house just gets better and better. There are 200 acres, dogs, cats, donkeys and hens – children can collect the eggs and go on tractor rides. The countryside is magnificent, beaches fabulous and this is a classified dark sky area. A house full of flowers and warmth.

Reviews

A piece of living history, lovingly preserved by a delightful owner. Chipperkyle is as far removed from the Premier Inn experience as is possible - and thank goodness for that. A gem of a place, rather hidden away, and in a part of Scotland whose physical charms are present, though understated. For those who care for individuality and adventure. An experience to be treasured.

A gem of a place. Willie is a great host, full of friendly helpful advice. The room was spacious and welcoming. Willie has lots of great stories to tell. He obviously loves the house, the land and the locals. He will make you feel very welcome. Plenty of parking! A great vibe.

Valerie, Mornington Melbourne

We spent a delightful one night stay at Chipperkyle en route to the Western Isles. Willie is a charming, warm and friendly host and the house is relaxed and comfortable. A hearty breakfast and genuine interest in sharing places to visit on our route north set us up for the day.

Ailsa, Oxford

Fascinating historic house in rolling Galloway countryside. The host gave us a warm welcome and provides fine dining and breakfasts with fresh, local ingredients. Every comfort provided for including the fine sitting room with a log fire on a cold, wet day. Well away from any traffic noise but still convenient for access to all major routes. We’ll be back!

Caroline, Llandovery

A very last minute booking but we were made very welcome by Willie. He produced a delicious evening meal for us with little notice. It was a delightful evening spent with his other guests. We will definitely be back.

Alain, Banstead

We certainly had a warm welcome from our host Willie who made us comfortable in his eclectic, rambling house, surrounded by gardens and views of the Galloway hills. Books abound on every table including collections of local artists and the history of the area. Wholesome organic breakfasts and dinner cooked to order was a special treat. Willie’s advice on What to do and Where to go, as only a local can do, helped us plan our days. This is a lovely area and Willie’s hospitality and Chipperkyle will surely call us back.

Chipperkyle is a truly wonderful place. Willie is a fantastic host. He made us very welcome straight away and made us a great meal on our first night. The rooms, bathroom and all other areas were clean, tidy and full of history, both personal and local. We would love to stay there again soon.

Gary, Surrey

A very fleeting one night visit and really wished we had more time as Chipperkyle is such a beautiful house, Willie is a lovely and relaxed host and we would love to explore more of the area as it sounds stunning, we will try and come back!

Sorcha, London

The most amazing location, we had fully underestimated Galloway‘s beauty. Willie is the best ambassador for his region with a lot of suggestions and ideas where to go and what to see. And then … WHAT an AMAZING house renovated with so much love and care and you feel welcome even before you arrive. Thank you Willie for this amazing stay - we will be back!

CHRISTINE, MANCHESTER

What a wonderful place. The house is beautiful and set in glorious countryside. Willie was so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The downstairs room was perfect for staying with a young child as there is a small single room that attaches to it. Thank you for a wonderful stay

A fabulous place to stay, and quintessentially Sawday's. Comfortable, welcoming, informal and individual. Willie couldn't have been more welcoming, and is an excellent, imaginative cook who provided us with delicious meals, which we could complement with our own wines. The room and house were very comfortable and access to a drying room for our boots and waterproofs was a valuable resource during our November stay...

Geoff, Oxford

This is a place where everything seems right in the world and Willie is a big part of this. Hunker down, breath and relax into the peace and dignity of Chipperkyle and you will leave rejuvenated and ready to face the madness again.

Catherine, Petworth

What a delightful place to stay! We had booked to stay with our friend from Cumbria in 2020 but of course had to cancel. So it was with great delight that we found ourselves at Chipperkyle for two nights which we wish could have been much longer. Willie welcomed us with tea and delicious cake and immediately made us feel at home. The bedrooms were very comfortable and beautifully furnished and the elegant lounge and dining room were a perfect place to enjoy Willie's company and gourmet cooking. An Art Tour of Kirkcudbright that Willie arranged for us was excellent thank you. We hope to return.

Rosemary, Watford

We had a one night stay here in the most peaceful surroundings. Friendly and helpful host who makes a lovely evening meal and a great breakfast. What more can you need? Thank you for a super start to our week in this delightful part of the world.

Sylvia, Ramsbottom

Booked Dinner, Bed and Breakfast for 1 night. Stayed for 2 as the accomodation, house, grounds and host were outstanding. Our host,Willie, provided delicious restaurant quality homemade food. Breakfast was unhurried and we enjoyed an abundance of local fayre. Dinner was simply divine. Beautifully presented perfectly cooked courses. If you visit Chipperkyle make sure you book dinner for each night of your stay. The dining room is elegant and comfortably as is the drawing room. We had breakfast and dinner outside on a terrace as the weather was perfect. A delightful stay for us and our labrador.

Chipperkyle & Willie were the cornerstone to one of the happiest days of our lives – our marriage. With consummate skill Willie roused Chipperkyle into life on a cold November weekend to house our family and enable our marriage to go ahead. It’s a beautiful home and Willie is an amazing host who made us so welcome and cranked the fires up so we were oblivious to the cold outside and fed us with amazing home cooked food. We can’t thank Willie and his lovely staff enough for sharing his home with us and giving us great memories for ever. We all highly recommend this wonderful place, Chipperkyle.

What a wonderful place! A beautiful Georgian house in a lovely location miles from anywhere. Willie is the consummate host and an excellent chef. If you can persuade him to join you at the table you are in for a treat.

Kate, London

Chipperkyle is a very special place - a beautiful Georgian house and grounds in idyllic countryside. We stayed for a week with our ten year old and had a wonderful time in Galloway exploring the peaceful beaches, forests and small towns. Willie is an excellent and thoughtful host with a talent for cooking - the breakfast was great, and he also cooked us evening meals on a couple of nights. Highly recommended!

Clare, London

What makes this house really special is Willie. We travelled as a family of six (with 4 more or less grown up kids) and Willie really welcomed us as friends and not as guests. Everyone felt immediately at home. He was open and extremely nice to the younger generation as well as to us. We enjoyed twice a delicious dinner and went out once to a friendly local pub. As this stay was in the middle of our holidays, Willie kindly offered to use his washing machine to do some laundry, which we did. On our last day, he even provided us with a small lunch pack, as he knew we had a longer journey ahead.
