The
Experience
This beautiful Scottish-Georgian family home has not a hint of formality, and sociable Willie puts you at your ease. Your sitting and dining rooms connect through a large arch; find gloriously comfy sofas, family pictures, rugs on wooden floors, masses of books and a constant log fire. Upstairs: good linen, striped walls, armchairs and windows with views – this wonderful house just gets better and better. There are 200 acres, dogs, cats, donkeys and hens – children can collect the eggs and go on tractor rides. The countryside is magnificent, beaches fabulous and this is a classified dark sky area. A house full of flowers and warmth.

We had a warm welcome from Willie and his fascinating historic home from the moment we stepped inside. The room was beautifully furnished, lovely linen and large fluffy towels, a very quirky bathroom next door. Kimonos on the door for us to use. Delicious supper out in the garden and the same for breakfast with wonderful rolling countryside to enjoy from the garden. Willie has a wealth of tales about the house and the area, and it seems nothing is too much trouble. We intend to return.

We stayed here for the first part of our honeymoon. Willie is a unique, fantastic host and we loved every minute of our stay. Breakfast was wonderful, a great start to the day. Willie gave us an alternative route to our next destination which meant we took in some stunning scenery. Thank you so much Willie, our stay was a great start to the year!

We recently stayed at Chipperkyle for two nights and it was the highlight of our trip to the UK. Our only regret is that we didn't plan more time there. Willie was a perfect host, Chipperkyle is a gem and the surrounding area is absolutely picturesque. One of the most relaxing places we have ever visited. For those unfamiliar with this beautiful part of the world, I highly recommend taking a detour (hang a left) at the border. Wander up to Kirkpatrick Durham and then just relax with a game of tennis and a bottle of rose. Also a great base to explore the southwest of Scotland.

Stayed at Chipperkyle for Spring Fling. On arrival we were greeted with tea and cake - delicious. This is just one of the thoughtful touches Willie Dickson offers. Willie is a gracious and knowledgeable host, offering local information on what to see and do. There is plenty to explore around Dumfries & Galloway or simply enjoy Chipperkyle's grounds. Chipperkyle offers a tranquil and perfect place to stay.

First off this is an amazing place to stay; the location, Georgian house and eclectic interior is 1st class. An absolute classic style. As much as I and my family enjoy roaring fires and antique decanter collections it was Willie Dickson our charming host and the owner of Chipperkyle which we will remember above all. Willie went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Our only regret was not staying longer. We have stayed at many guest houses around Europe and this is as good as it gets.

We stayed here for two nights to attend a nearby wedding. Our daughter, her husband and baby took the other room. The house was extremely comfortable with a fine array of good quality furniture and family portraits. Breakfasts were beautiful with excellent choice and presentation. But the real star was Willie Dickson. Welcoming and fascinating, he organised somewhere local for us to eat after an exhausting journey up on Good Friday and offered to run us around if taxis failed to show up, etc. He even posted on something we left behind. When we are up there again, we will definitely return.

Everything about Chipperkyle is gracious and grand - the rooms and en-suites, the warmth and kindness of the hosts, the delicious breakfasts. It is peaceful and comfortable, and absolutely nothing is a problem for Willie and Catriona, hosts and owners. We were lucky to stay there twice! And we would certainly stay there again.

Local points of interest from Willie Dickson
- Calm, quiet, gentle, stunning countryside, big skies, trilling birdsong, truly dark nights sparkling with stars, tranquil freshwater lochs, sandy coastal beaches, high cliffs, Galloway Hills, lush green farmland; all suffused with warmth of the Gulf Stream

- Southerness Golf course is set on the edge of a remote headland and is virtually unknown by the golfing masses. It measures just over 6,500 yards but with a par of 69 - is this too tough for you? Try Powfoot created by James Braid or 32 other local courses
- Threave Gardens is the best known in this mild, lime-free area but also Broughton House and Cally Gardens nearby. My favourites are Elizabeth MacGregor who produced Anemone 'Wild Swan' Chelsea Plant of Year 2011,Shambellie and Buckland Nursery

We have just returned home from a wonderfully relaxing and restorative stay at Chipperkyle. The accommodation is very comfortable with a beautiful drawing room to relax in and browse through the books on the area. Both breakfast and the evening meals are excellent with an array of local produce. But it is the host, Willie, who really makes this Bed and Breakfast stand out from the rest. He offers wonderful hospitality and nothing seems too much trouble .
