Eilean Shona Cottages

Acharacle, Argyll & Bute

Wake to the birds, swim off the white sands of Shoe Bay, roam the island, marvel at the sunsets. Heaven for nature lovers in 7 cottages

7 places

Sleeping from 2 – 8

On the small private island of Shona, teeming with wildlife, lapped by aquamarine waters, is a scattering of ex-crofters’ cottages – unspoilt and with magical views. From a jetty on the other side you are ferried across by one of the team, and your luggage is transported to the cottages. You proceed on foot: a few paces to the Bothy, a few minutes to the rest, and a half hour’s boat ride to South Shore Cottage, off-grid, gas lamp-lit and coal stove-heated (don’t run out of matches!). Inside all are pretty and charming, with comfy sofas, bright rugs and painted panelling, simple kitchens (two with dishwashers), spotless bathrooms, books, board games and peaty spring water – good to drink and soft to bathe in. All have fire pits and picnic tables; and Sawmill (for two) and Tioram (for eight) have their own private loch bays. For kids who can handle the rufty-tufty terrain this is heaven: they can make camps, feed the deer, go crabbing, swim, paddle out in kayaks, play ping pong, tap into WiFi in the former village hall. There’s a tiny island shop and two ferry trips are included; stock up in Ardnamurchan, have tea in the lighthouse!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Eilean Shona

  • Eilean Shona is a nature paradise only an hour from Fort William. There are no cars on the island and lots of trails to explore and wildlife to see.
  • There's a huge range of activities on offer on Eilean Shona, such as building camp fires, crabbing, swimming, painting, kayaking, paddleboarding, nature watching, photography and walking.
  • Castle Tioram was the traditional home of the Clanranalds and a key strategic asset in the Lord of the Isles defence of his demesnes. The castle ruins, a key feature of the region, can be seen through many cottage windows and as you walk along the coast.
  • In the 1920s J.M. Barrie rented Eilean Shona for the summer, where he was joined by Michael Llewelyn Davies and some friends. Barrie is thought to have written both the screenplay of Peter Pan and the ghost story, Mary Rose, while on Eilean Shona.
