The
Experience

By the small fishing river at the mouth of the Glen, settled into its own wooded grounds, is a big Scottish farmhouse (once a drovers’ inn) where on a still summer night you hear the lapping of the sea. A fine, traditional, cultured place, it’s been in Ian’s family since time began and overflows with colour and character. Bedrooms share bathrooms and each is a gem: old polished floors topped with bright rugs, chalky blue walls hung with paintings; you might hear sheepdogs barking at night. Wake to a fine breakfast (Ian loves to cook), head off down winding roads with views of islands and mountains, return to sprawling armchairs by the log fire.

Reviews

We had a 2 week trip with another couple to Scotland and Ireland. By far, Ian's house was my favorite lodging. The family memorabilia made the house so much more than a twee B&B. Each item contributed to an aesthetic whole which was entirely satisfying. The sitting room fire in the evening remains a very happy memory. Nuts and bolts---beds were comfortable, breakfast very good, and I was deeply appreciative of Ian's allowing me to do laundry! One of the most charming artifacts was the fish outline in the kitchen. I wish the best of luck to Callachally, and hope to return.

Local points of interest from Ian Mazur

  • Callachally is the perfect place from which to explore the Isle of Mull, 15 mins from the ferry, 5 mins from Salen, with its Spar shop, Pub, petrol and Italian restaurant. A 10 min walk takes you the beach and sound of Mull and my local Pub and restaurant.
  • A 20 minute drive takes you to the picturesque town of Tobermory, full of bars and great food (including the freshest seafood), with harbour views, cosy cafes, a good arts centre and whiskey distillery - lots to do!
  • The magical Isle of Ulva is 25 minutes away for really great varied walks, with seafood heaven in the shape of the boat house, which serves fresh oysters, lobster salad, and crab pate; perfect after a good walk.
  • The wild life is all around you, from Sea Eagles, to Otters, Dolphins, Whales and giant Basking Sharks. There are tours by boat or land rover, or, best of all, just you and a pair of binoculars.
  • Beaches are in plentiful supply: sandy white ones, tucked away and hidden ones, black beaches and picnic beaches - all within an hour of the house.
  • The island is full of history: Duart Castle, a true Highland stronghold, Iona and its famous Abbey, ( and some of the best beaches on the west coast), with the award winning Ninth Wave restaurant on your way home.
