The
Experience

Beautifying, restoring, then inviting the world to share it is a splendid way to save and celebrate an old family house. John’s ancestors built this elegantly generous mansion 200 years ago. After two years of deep and respectful restoration, he and Lou hung up their tools, opened the door and put their creative talents at the service of independent travellers wanting gentle young style, warm and lovely rooms and good fresh home-cooked food. The Mathers love this house and its history, at every turn there’s an old family photograph (don’t miss the downstairs loo), a linen history memento, an original wall hanging. The blend of antique and modern gives the house easy charm, soft colours are mixed for serenity – peach, green, all the beiges – perfect foils for the lustrous furniture. Superb modern bathrooms and IT connections are unobtrusive extras. On leaving uni, John trained as a chef so come prepared to indulge in fine wines and food (much comes from their own veg patch). The estate is a labour of love, and a family affair – you can buy the watercolours by Lou’s father and admire the formal garden, deservedly listed, looked after by John’s.

Reviews

We were only able to stay one night but everything about the place was wonderful. We had a very warm welcome with tea brought to us on arrival. The room was spotless ,well appointed and very comfortable. Dinner was a most memorable event. There is an excellent selection of wines and John`s cooking was divine. The quality, presentation not to mention the exquisite flavours of each course will be imprinted on my memory for ever. My allergy to cream was no problem and the service was most attentive. This was the best cooking that we experienced throughout our recent tour of the north of Ireland.

14 of us overnight just had a wonderful wedding celebration. A full house. Organised by the young couple themselves it was a wonderful surprise for 4 generations. The attention to detail and thoughtfulness about every comfort was admirable. Leaf tea and real coffee with real milk in the bedroom. The staff knew all our individual names. The children were very well catered for. Croquet while we drank champagne and had photographs taken. Delicious dinner and breakfast everything very fresh. A cheeseboard to die for. John was the perfect host. Thank you so much.
