The
Experience

A 17th-century hunting lodge on the Fitzwilliam estate, not far from Castle Howard. It stands on the edge of town with Malton’s streets on one side and country views on the other. Outside, there’s a croquet lawn, a terrace for lunch, and paths that lead down to the river. Inside, an easy elegance abounds. A fire burns in the drawing room, you find fresh flowers, lovely art, the daily papers and cavernous sofas. Bedrooms have chic fabrics, warm colours and botanical prints on the walls. Several have the view, all have robes in gorgeous bathrooms. Now to the serious stuff – delicious local food. Malton, an ancient market town, is the food capital of Yorkshire, with a festival every May that was started by the estate. No surprise then to discover the hotel has two restaurants serving the best Yorkshire produce. They also run a cookery school and have food trails to follow – to pie shops, vineyards, local farms and breweries. Dinner, predictably, is a treat, perhaps pressing of Yorkshire duck, local lamb with an olive jus, coffee crème brûlée. There’s a farmers’ market every other Saturday, too.
