The
Experience

South Stainley is a small village, with pub, church and this fine vicarage, six miles from Ripon, ten from Harrogate. Come for the races, the Dales… Sleep peacefully in a charming room up under the eaves. Julia has decorated her guest room unfussily, tucked in a sofa and added an antique wardrobe and blanket chest. The bathroom’s really smart and big, with separate shower and bath. Linger over your Aga breakfast – full English, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon – in the lofty new garden room with leafy views, pastel colours, original art. You’re welcome to use the swimming pool and tennis court, and you can walk to the pub for dinner.

Reviews

We spent some lovely days in this area and were welcomed very warmly in Julia's house. The location is very peaceful and overlooks the countryside. Our room was very comfortable and cosy. Breakfast was delicious, we even had figs from her own figtree, that produced figs for the first year ! Nearby, in walking distance is The Inn that has since short new owners. We had there a very good dinner and the service was very friendly.

Comfortable, quiet room with lovely bathroom in a nice Old Vicarage next to the church. A beautiful part of Yorkshire. Welcoming hosts and a good breakfast. Would recommend to anyone staying in the Harrogate area.

Outstanding B&B in a lovely house ideally placed for local attractions, or to break your journey to the North or to the South. Very spacious bedroom and bathroom. Comfortable, friendly, and relaxed, it soothed us after difficult Friday traffic. And with the significant advantage of a fine gastro-pub 5 mins walk down a country lane. A really good find.

  • Harrogate is host to many events whether at the Royal Hall, theatre, Conference centre or Yorkshire show ground. Stay with us after a day at the Flower Show or a night out at the ballet. Spend the day strolling around Valley Gardens or the Turkish Baths.
  • Walking in North Yorkshire is a must; whether you walk from the house and join the Ripon Rowel or drive to the North York Moors, explore The Dales or clamber over Brimham Rocks. There are many local walks for all abilities on our doorstep.
  • Fountains Abbey and Study Royal Water Garden are the largest monastic ruins in the country. Wander around the gardens and learn about the monastic life, then take in a light lunch or a cream tea. Stop off at the magnificent Ripon Cathedral on the way back.
  • Ripley Castle is a Grade I listed 14th-century country house only 5 minutes away with a beautiful village offering more than just world famous ice cream! Or visit Newby Hall built in 1690s by Sir Christopher Wren surrounded by beautiful gardens.
  • With both Leeds and York only a short distance away a visit to these 2 very different cities is easily accessible from The Old Vicarage. These cities offer history, shopping, dining, museums, Roman ruins and much more.
