If you’re looking for the perfect pied-à-terre in York, you’ll find it in the light-filled basement of 22 St Mary’s. Down private stairs from a quiet street of elegant Victorian houses, the studio is so chic it’s almost Parisian. A French carved bed, Persian rugs on oak floors, a pale grey linen chesterfield and flowing cream curtains… it’s not just David’s paintings that are artistic. Off the sitting room, a top-notch kitchenette gleams in stainless steel and reclaimed slate; you eat at a little round table hugged by the front bay windows, which catch the evening sun. Sleeping and living areas are separated by three sets of glass-paned château doors, so light floods through the apartment from both sides and you can close off or open up the space depending on your mood. A rainfall shower cascades in the brand new wetroom. David and Anita, who live above, exemplify the studio’s artistic feel and laid-back charm and can provide a gourmet breakfast in a basket. It’s a scenic eight-minute walk through Museum Gardens to the softly chiming York Minster, restaurants, tea rooms and shopping along the Shambles.

We spent two months in the Atelier, which left us the will to return there. A friendly atmosphere and people of very kindness, besides the proximity of the most interesting places of the city. Great option for anyone who wants to visit the beautiful York.

Everardo, Estoril

Outstanding accommodation created by welcoming hosts who had clearly considered providing every aspect of comfort from the bed to delicious bread, eggs, wine & a Yorkshire curd tart from Betty's. A wonderful weekend.

We stayed at the Atelier for 4 days in September 2017 and couldn't have been happier. It's a lovely comfortable apartment, beautifully furnished and with every detail taken care of. It's also in a great position - just a short walk through the gardens and you're in the heart of York. We had a hire car but didn't use it at all while we were there, we could get to everywhere on foot. It was a wonderful stay and we'd highly recommend it.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Atelier 22. Hosts Anita and David were extremely welcoming and every little detail has been considered for the apartment. We ate at two of the restaurants recommended by Anita and David and were not disappointed, the food was fantastic at both (ambiente tapas and cafe at no.8 bistro). We underestimated how much time we'd need in York and so we will definitely be going back, and Atelier 22 will be our first choice of where to stay. Thanks for a lovely stay!

What a lovely stylish apartment! We stayed for four nights and were delighted with the light and beautifully decorated apartment. The longer you stay the more you notice the attention to detail that has been lavished on 'the Atelier'. We particularly loved the lighting - warm and ambient with dimmers to create a cosy atmosphere. Anita and David made us very welcome, providing us with the essentials (milk, cereals etc.) and some treats to help make our stay pleasurable. The apartment is superbly located, situated 5 minutes from the city. We will definitely return to this lovely haven of calm.

Karen, Cheltenham

Delightful, super stylish apartment in a great location close to the river and Cathedral - wonderful, generous hosts have thought of every detail to make you feel immediately welcome and relaxed. Thank you.

Melanie, Norwich

We stayed for a week at the Atelier in York and we enjoyed it very much. The area was quiet and the apartment was calm and relaxing after the bustle of the city centre. We loved the decor! The provisions and toiletries left for us were lovely and very much appreciated. In short, everything was just as we had hoped and it's obvious that a great deal of thought and effort has gone in to ensuring a delightful and comfortable stay for guests.

Elsie, Shetland

We had a wonderful weekend in this beautiful apartment. We have stayed in many places in York over the years and this is the loveliest. Perfect quiet location within walking distance of all the city centre attractions. Thank you Anita and David for a special welcome and perfect escape.

Jacky, Isle of man

Anita and David have taken great care in creating a comfortable, stylish and well-equipped apartment with lots of personal touches. Lovely breakfast goods provided and a welcome bottle of wine. The location is perfect for exploring York on foot, central but on a very quiet street. Would definitely recommend!

Jo, Leamington spa

We had a lovely weekend in this gorgeous apartment. The owners, who are very artistic, have put their magic into creating a restful French style apartment. Lots eclectic furniture and a fridge full of goodies including wine, free range eggs and sourdough bread with tarts from Betty's. It could not be better. The location is brilliant, about 5 minutes from the train station and about the same into town. I would recommend it and can't wait to go back.

Sally-anne, Stourbridge

We spent ten wonderful days in Anita`s and David`s “Atelier”. We enjoyed the comfort and luxury of the apartment and the atmosphere in the quiet street just behind the Museum Gardens. Anita and David helped us to explore York and to find unforgettable places in Yorkshire! Lisa and Arni, Burghausen

The York Atelier is an exquisite jewel. We stayed a full month in June 2014. Spacious, light, quiet and ideally situated, the flat is tastefully decorated in antiques, industrial chic, and mid-century modern furniture. All details—fresh flowers, pristine linens, wine and treats—have been carefully attended to, and no expense spared. The small kitchen is fabulous. The washer/dryer was great, the double bed comfortable, and the shower excellent. There is a lovely garden view. Anita and David were perfect hosts—always available but considerate of our privacy. Book without hesitation. Magical!!!

Gorgeous flat, is absolutely everything the description promises! Luxurious and super convenient with lovely hosts! We had a great weekend.

Below stairs near the end of a quiet Victorian terrace, ten minutes walk thru gardens to the heart of old and new York. The location is ideal for exploring the city on foot. The interior of the atelier is even more charming than the photos portray. I stayed 3 weeks and found it suitably furnished with all necessary appliances for the length of the stay. The atelier has good light from the street in front and a lovely garden in back - My visit fell during magnolia and camellia time! David & Anita could not have been better hosts nor more enjoyable friends.

The York Atelier is a lovely place to stay and is superbly placed for exploring the city. David and Anita have created a tasteful, supremely comfortable and luxurious apartment in this quiet street, and we felt it was a real treat to stay there. We appreciated their helpful, but not intrusive, style; and we really enjoyed the welcoming touches and foodie treats they had left us. We heartily recommend the apartment and hope to visit again ourselves before too long.

Local points of interest from David Campbell & Anita Evagora

  • The apartment is minutes away from York's many attractions. A walk through the tranquil Museum Gardens, past the medieval ruins of St. Marys Abbey and the restored 3rd century Roman Multangular tower brings you into the pedestrianised heart of the city.
  • York Minster (5 mins) - the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in Europe but don't miss out on a walk along the well preserved City Walls, and step back in time as you ramble down the Shambles or cut through a snickleway to the C15th Barley Hall.
  • Unmissable Museums – Castle Museum with its period interiors and day/night Victorian street scene, the National Railway Museum – a surprise even for those with little or no interest in trains and Fairfax House, the finest Georgian town house in the U.K.
  • We are minutes from York's top restaurants – a 4 min. stroll along the Ouse to the enviably located Star Inn the City with its riverside views. Award winning Cafe No. 8 Bistro is also 4 mins away near the city gates. Small, friendly and consistently good.
  • Our recommendations for eating out and within 15 minutes of The Atelier – Partisan, Le Cochon Aveugle, Cafe No. 8, Skosh (book well in advance for these) Mannion and of course Betty's Tearooms.
  • Within 1 1/2 hours drive is some of Englands finest countryside – the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and stunning coastal scenery at Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Flamborough Head. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Hepworth Museum are not to be missed.
