The
Experience

A house brimming with atmosphere and said to be the inspiration for Wuthering Heights. Julie’s knowledge of the history is impressive and she offers tours of her fascinating home. Arrive for tea and home-baked cake and soak up the mullion windows, huge flagstones, period pieces and original paintings. Bedrooms have just the right balance of luxury and individuality: an amazing box bed, rocking horse, raftered ceilings – and log stoves in two. A full Yorkshire breakfast is served in the magnificent main hall. Walk the Pennine Way, hop on a steam train at Keighley; Haworth is close too – for all things Brontë and independent shops.

Reviews

Steeped in Bronte history, the accommodation is superb and the hospitality by Steve and Julie is second to none! Even if you've never heard of Wuthering Heights, the charm of this refurbished house will bowl you over. Highly recommend that everyone visit this superb establishment!

Chris, Stockport

Great family house filled with history and very impressed by the owners' kindness. Definitively would recommend it!

Claire

Wow. Such a lovely place, Julie and Steve are lovely people and make you feel like friends rather than guests, we had a wonderful night there, the house and its history is amazing, and the room we stayed in was beautiful. Such a perfect place. Being welcomed with tea and cake was great, as was the extra effort made by them to book us a table for dinner, and drive us to and from the restaurant. It felt like nothing was too much trouble, and coupled with a great sleep, to start the day with such a breakfast was fantastic. We are already trying to find reasons to return!

Local points of interest from Julie Akhurst

  • The Bronte sisters visited here, used the house as inspiration for Wuthering Heights and borrowed from the library. One bedroom boasts the window where Cathy's ghost knocked, according to tradition. If you'd like a tour, we're happy to give you one.
  • We're just three miles from the Brontes' home town of Haworth, with its famous Bronte Parsonage Museum, where the Brontes lived and wrote their world-famous books
  • We're situated on the edge of Haworth Moor, right on the Pennine Way, overlooking beautiful Ponden Reservoir
  • Other local attractions include Haworth's Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Railway (3 miles), the permanent David Hockney exhibition Salt's Mill at World Heritage Site Saltaire (11 miles), Bradford's Media Museum (12 miles), the Yorkshire Dales (13 miles)
  • We have some great local places to eat, including the excellent foodie pub The Grouse, Stanbury's The Old Silent Inn, and, in Haworth, The Old Registry, and Embers
  • We welcome children, have cot and high chair facilities, and our 17-year-old daughter will provide a babysitting service should you wish to use it.
