The
Experience

Prepare to be amazed. In every room of the house and in every corner of the garden, the marriage of natural beauty and sophistication exists in a state of bliss. Beds from Heals, period furniture, cast-iron baths, myriad prints and paintings and one double bed so high you wonder how to get onto it. Tim and Austin, both ex-English teachers, have created something special, and the breakfasts are superb. A stay at Millgate House without exploring the garden would be an unforgivable omission; this prize-winning walled town garden deserves every bouquet and adulatory article it has received. A narrow lane to one side of the house, adorned with immaculate hostas, introduces the main garden. The long terraced grounds, sloping steeply down towards the river, are divided into a rhythmic series of lush compartments. All is green, with cascades of foliage breaking out into small, sunny open areas before you dive beneath yet more foliage to explore further secret areas. Great plantsmanship and a love of many different leaf forms come together triumphantly. If you just want to explore the garden you can arrange a visit.

Reviews

Our second stay at Millgate House was just as special as the first a couple of years ago. The garden was our main reason for returning and was delightful. I would love to see it in every season, the planting is so creative and well designed. The house is packed with antiques and quirky objects (I don't think I'd risk taking my dog- her tail could do no end of damage) but very comfortable. The owners were away but Mark and the other staff were very friendly and helpful. The position on the edge of the main square was convenient but not noisy. A great stay. Perfect for garden lovers.

We loved this house and had a fabulous quirky suite all to ourselves - perfect for our dog and one year old. We love antiques and the place is dripping with them! And the garden is fabulous. All in all a fascinating place to stay.
