The Experience

Two sweet escapes for two. One is tucked next to Rick and Sue’s house in a quiet village, its charming roses-and-hollyhocks exterior does not disappoint and inside it’s romantic with low beams and sheepskin rugs. Step straight into the low-beamed sitting room (tall folk beware) with its soft colours, bright gingham armchair and cream wood-burner. There’s a smart kitchen, a table-for-two and upstairs a dove-grey bedroom with soft rugs on painted floorboards. The other is a little loft conversion at the bottom of the garden. A secret path lined with espaliered apple trees and tubs of flowers takes you to a dinky private courtyard. Walk through a glass door into a contemporary space: an open plan dining area and kitchen with upcycled furniture, pretty porcelain plates and a soft grey colour scheme enlivened with zingy limes and pinks. Vases burst with fresh flowers and skylights let in the light. Upstairs to your cosy double and funky en suite. Rick is a chef and it shows: for lazy suppers he can prepare meals to re-heat or you can slip next door to the pub. Ripon Cathedral and Harrogate’s spa town are nearby or take bracing walks on the North York Moors.

Reviews

We chose Garden Lodge as a base to explore beautiful Yorkshire for two weeks whilst holidaying from Australia. The cottage is quiet, beautifully presented and spacious. We had everything we needed for an extended stay. The quiet village is tucked away with a nice pub and all the attractions of of this part of Yorkshire are just a short drive away. Rick and Sue are wonderful hosts, lovely people and very welcoming. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely stay in Garden Lodge, the cottage is perfect, even nicer than the photos. We enjoyed dinner prepared by Rick, which I would highly recommend , a great way to celebrate my birthday. Lots of places to visit within a short drive, and the nature reserve on the doorstep was enjoyed by the dog.

We stayed in Garden Lodge.. First class accommodation, very comfortable, peaceful, quiet and extremely well equipped. Spotlessly clean. Nicely fitted out kitchen with modern appliances, including a dishwasher. The lounge area upstairs is very spacious, warm and cosy. There is a comfortable bed and large shower in the bathroom. The host, Rick, is very welcoming and will prepare a meal if required, which the guests finish off themselves. We had a delicious meal on two nights. Pub next door - lots of attractions nearby. Very highly recommended "home from home"

Local points of interest from Sue & Rick Hodgson

  • Romantic dinner for two! Chef Rick Hodgson will do all the hard work, all you have to do is open the fridge and turn the oven on! Delicious. All food preferences catered for using seasonal locally sourced ingredients. Let us know at the time of booking.
  • From Staveley you will be spoilt for choice for places to eat out- we name 10 fantastic eating pubs on our website not more than 5 miles away from our doorstep. We recommend the Crown at Roecliffe, which you can walk to on summer evenings from our cottages
  • Staveley Nature Reserve is right on the doorstep- you will see swans, geese and ducks- and on early summer evenings you may also see deer, owls and otters. Enchanting! There a 3 hides on the reserve which provide excellent views across the lakes.
  • No trip is complete for us without our beloved Spaniels - Lucy and George. We are happy to welcome your well behaved dog and will be very pleased to advise you of beautiful dog friendly walks on the doorstep from our cottages,
  • Rick is a British Cycle Coach- we warmly welcome cyclists. Plenty of advice for route-planning and safe storage for bikes. Talk to Rick to plan a great trip. This is perfect cycling country- did you see Le Tour de Yorkshire? From simple to challenging....
  • Staveley is wonderfully located for a real exploration of beautiful North Yorkshire: Charmin Knaresborough, grand spa town of Harrogate, world heritage site at Fountains Abbey, beautiful gardens at Newby Hall, medieval York just half an hour away.
