The
Experience

Pretty pretty pretty! Once the home of Bewerley Hall’s head gardener, this couple’s hideaway is comfy, cute and at the tail of a terrace of stone cottages. Step in to a sitting room that envelops you in cheering warmth: a wood-burner in the inglenook; two squishy red sofas dotted with cushions; a bookcase brimming with books, an iPod dock, guides and maps. For muddy wellies there’s a boot room, and next to this, a cottagey kitchen. Upstairs is a double with excellent linen and lovely views over cherry trees and the village green, and a bathroom with slipper bath and local lotions. On sunny days, follow the sun front or back, dine out and soak up the views over Bewerley Park, the river and town beyond. Walk from the door, along the river Nidd or to How Stean limestone gorge; you’re in beautiful Nidderdale and the Yorkshire Dales are a few miles away. Explore by foot, bike or horse – a mountain bike centre and stables are nearby – and well-behaved dogs are welcome (downstairs). For a more sedate ramble, stroll to charming Pateley Bridge (5 minutes) and pick up your dinner – there’s a deli, butchers and a good pub. Perfect.

Reviews

Our four night stay at Bewerley Hall Cottage was simply not long enough. This homely, clean and comfortable cottage is well appointed in a peaceful village, only a few minutes from Pateley Bridge, with local amenities. We explored the area with our dogs and enjoyed the views from Yorke's Folly, climbed at Brimham Rocks and walked around Gouthwaite Reservoir. Thanks to Denise and Nigel for your hospitality and nice goodies for us on arrival, as well as ensuring everything was in order.

The most gorgeous cottage in one of the most idyllic and stunning locations in England! We have just returned from a weekend staying at Bewerley Hall Cottage and can't wait to return. It was spotlessly clean and chic with everything and more than we could wish for thought of and provided. We walked to the local pubs and restaurants plus enjoyed a wonderful long walk in the glorious Nidderdale, up in the old lead mines and quarries returning to the peace and tranquillity of the cottage. A wonderful place to relax and put all your usual troubles aside. Many thanks to Denise and Nigel.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Denise & Nigel McConnell

  • Bewerley village - dates back to the Domesday, with pretty stone cottages, village green, and the peaceful Bewerley Grange Chapel built in 1494 by Marmaduke Huby, one of the last abbots of nearby Fountains Abbey - look out for his initials and motto.
  • Pateley Bridge - the main Dales town of Nidderdale and just a short stroll from the cottage door. You'll find two great local pubs, a bakery, delis, award winning butchers, galleries, gift shops, tea rooms and our favourite Italian restaurant 'Ollies'
  • Yorkes Folly - known locally as 'Two Stoops' and just above Bewerley. Built in this prominent position in the late 18th Century by John Yorke of Bewerley Hall, partly to provide employment during bad times. Fantastic view point, well worth the walk up
  • Fountains Abbey - now owned by the National Trust and a spectacular World Heritage Site.
  • The Yorke Arms, Ramsgill - a Michelin starred restaurant located in the pretty village of Ramsgill just a short drive from Bewerley and Pateley Bridge.
  • Gouthwaite Reservoir just outside Pateley - stunning whether on foot, by car or on a bike, sits just below How Stean Gorge and not forgetting the Nidderdale Way - long distance footpath between Hampsthwaite and Scar House.
