The Experience
An extraordinary place to stay. With nothing other than the chiming of the Minster bells to be heard from this three-storey, Georgian terraced house where generations of Minster clergy lived and contemplated.
2 Precentor’s Court was relinquished by the church in 2013 and the Cain’s have pulled-off a clever renovation combining the building’s old ecclesiastical charm with modern, uncluttered liveability, quirky, fun and family-friendly touches.
Exploring the city on foot is easy from here. Climb to the top of one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe, walk nearly three miles of city walls, stroll the cobbled Shambles, dip into designer and artisan shops, trendy cafes, tea shops and restaurants. There’s off-site parking if you do bring the car, maybe to head for the wilds of the North York Moors National Park and on to the coast.

Location
The neighbourhood
At the entrance to Precentor’s Court, 100m from York’s Gothic Cathedral, No 2 is within walking distance too of The Shambles, the Yorvik Centre, the Chocolate Story, the National Railway Museum and the railway station (be in London in 2; Edinburgh in 2.5hrs). The Cains keep The Knowledge – their in-house book of what to see and do, where to eat and shop, bang up-to-date so you’ll have knowledgeable insiders’ recommendations
Local points of interest from Boxing Hare Ltd
- A hidden gem occupying a unique and enviable position in the heart of York, just yards from the Dean's Garden and the 800 year old Gothic cathedral that is York Minster (#5 in Lonely Planet's top ten list of 'Sights to make you feel small').
- The property dates from the early 18th century, though it is sitting on foundations that date back nearly 2000 years to a time when there was a Roman fort on the site. Until very recently (2008), it housed the Precentors who led the singing in the Minster.
- Sympathetically restored and modernised, yet still retaining a wealth of original features dating back over 300 years. Featured in 25 Beautiful Homes magazine (July 2014) and awarded a Five Star Gold rating by Visit England.
- Ideally placed for exploring and enjoying the wonderful city of York, together with the beautiful county of Yorkshire (#3 in Lonely Planet's Top Ten Places to Visit in 2014). Visit the 'Galleries' section on our website for more inspiration.
- A superb base for exploring the rest of Britain. York’s famously curved Victorian railway station is just a few minutes walk away with connections all over the country including London and Edinburgh in just under two hours!
- On a lectern is a large red book entitled, 'The Knowledge'. Compiled by the owners, it is a constantly updated distillation of the best in and around York - including restaurants, pubs, shopping, sights, entertainment and day trips. Invaluable.

Introducing
Boxing Hare Ltd
Having loved living and working in the centre of York for nearly 20 years, the Cain family home is now a small farm north of the city. Though not generally free to meet and greet – access is via keypad – Stephen and Jane are confirmed Yorkophiles and have put masses of thought into the detail of the conversion and the kitting-out of No 2. They mind very much that guests have the best of times - and it shows.
