The Experience

You enter via a stable door to the kitchen, brimming with good kit and with plenty of room for preparing and cooking. A generous welcome hamper will be waiting for you with all the basics plus homemade cake and jams from James’s mum, local cheese, a bottle of wine and gorgeous seasonal veg from the garden when available. You can order prepared meals and breakfast packs in advance from James.

You’re surrounded by an acre of informal garden, created by James and his partner Mike. It is laid out as a series of ‘rooms’ with spaces for sitting and having a picnic or just a drink – you’re encouraged to stay as long as you like. Wildlife is plentiful and includes bats, hedgehogs, frogs, toads and many birds and butterflies – the whole garden is organic, including the veg patch. You’ll find shade under mature trees, summer houses for a glass of wine and a pond for gazing at dragonflies and newts.

Walkers can tackle Bredon Hill or The Malverns, which are on the doorstep; cyclists can discover the pretty yellow-stone villages round the hill or go further into the Cotswolds. There are two pubs within a five-minute walk and Eckington Manor in the village has a cookery school and good restaurant. On sunny days you can fire up the barbecue and eat in the garden; if the weather turns foul you can cosy up indoors by the wood-burner with extra cushions and blankets – open the wine and watch films or box sets.

Reviews

Difficult to put into 600 characters how magnificent The Dairy in Eckington is! From the moment you meet James and/or Mike at the gate, you are walking into a world of luxury. The extensive gardens demonstrate a commitment to re-wilding and sustainability. The dairy space, designed for two people, is very generous. James and Mike do nothing on the cheap. The fixtures and fittings throughout are very high spec. The welcome basket is brilliant. Everything is immaculately clean - fluffy towels and toiletries abound. We could not recommend this place highly enough. Thank you both so much.

Rachel, Dublin

This was our third visit to the charming and lovingly converted dairy building. The attention to detail applied by James and Mike to the relaxing decor and furnishings is equaled in the provision of everything needed on a practical basis for our stay including a lovely welcome hamper. The Dairy has its own private garden but guests are encouraged to wander or sit and relax in the wider garden which both James and Mike have put so much work into and is an absolute delight. James and Mike were extremely welcoming; nothing was too much trouble; and they know the surrounding area intimately.

Location

The neighbourhood

Bring bikes and cycle the gentle lanes through Cotswold stone villages with smart little shops, good pubs and pretty old churches. Walk in the Malvern hills for miles or drive to Cheltenham (busy at literature or jazz festival time, and when the horse races are on.) You're near Stratford for the theatre and classic Cotswold villages like Broadway and Bourton-on-the-Water. Keen gardeners can visit Hidcote, Snowshill, Kiftsgate, Croome Park, Packwood and Batsford Arboretum - James is happy to help you plan. Come by train to Pershore and James will organise a transfer for you.

Local points of interest from James Field

  • Broadway: A beautiful and historic Cotswold village with a pretty high street, lined with horse chestnut trees, which includes a mixture of period houses and picturesque honey coloured Cotswold stone cottages which have lured visitors for centuries.
  • Broadway Tower: Situated just outside Broadway. The folly was built by the Earl of Coventry and the grounds hold an adventure playground, a collection of rare animals and a restaurant which is housed in a converted Cotswold barn.
  • Hidcote Manor an: The finest gardens in the country are to be found just four miles outside Chipping Campden. Hidcote is owned by the National Trust.
  • Kiftsgate Gardens: Situated next to Hidcote Manor and reputed to be one of its main rivals.
  • Bredon Hill: Wonderful for walking or cycling. One of the reasons we moved here!
  • Cheltenham Spa with its races and many festivals; Cathedral city of Worcester; Pershore - A fine Georgian town with all local amenities and an arts centre (No 8) situated on the Avon.

Introducing

James Field

James, an ex-teacher from London, moved here with his partner, Mike, for a total change and a new challenge. He found both in the garden, which had been badly neglected and overrun with brambles, bindweed and ivy. Future plans include more garden 'rooms', a bigger pond to attract more wildlife and a wildflower meadow. He would also like to complete a yoga studio and have a couple of shepherd's huts.
