In a tranquil village next to the river is a house surrounded by water meadows and wilderness garden. Roses ramble, marsh orchids bloom and butterflies shimmer in this 12-acre labour of love. Michael’s home, a time-worn 18th-century miller’s house, is packed with country clutter – porcelain, foxes’ brushes, ancestral photographs above the fire – while bedrooms are quaint, flowery and old-fashioned with firm comfy beds. Breakfasts are served at small tables in the pretty dining room. Visit nearby Stonehenge, wander round historic Salisbury; return to sunny seats in the garden and watch the river Till go by.
