Great Chalfield Manor

Bed & Breakfast

To the manor born - at least for the night. Four posters, perfect panelling and ancient elegance abound; gardens are equally impressive

A National Trust house – a rare example of the English medieval manor complete with 14th-century church and Great Hall but a family home too where you will be treated by smiling Patsy as a guest not a visitor. Four-posters are swathed in the warmest colours, bathrooms are deeply old-fashioned and the only sound is bird ballad wafting from the hazy, bloom-filled dreaminess of the garden. Stand in the middle of the lawn, close your eyes and imagine that Titania and Oberon have just fluttered past – open your eyes and they have. A structure of neatly clipped yew houses, upper and lower moats, herbaceous borders, huge lawns and an orchard have been immaculately tended and enhanced by Patsy’s love of soft colour and roses. The south-facing terrace brims over with scented pink roses that bloom all summer, ramblers scrabble old stone walls and the fruit trees in the orchard – and they are not alone; there is honeysuckle in abundance too, rambling hither and thither. Water weaves through the grass in little streams which feed the serene moats and there is a magical woodland walk bursting with snowdrops in February.

This is indeed a very special place to stay and the hosts are welcoming and very friendly. The history of the Manor comes to life as you spend time there, it was fascinating to learn of the changes over centuries. To be able to sit in the peaceful and beautiful gardens in the early evening when all the visitors had gone was lovely. The planting was still full of interest and colour in late August and we look forward to return visits earlier in the year. Full scale breakfast was very good with proper tea and local eggs. Supper was very good value and The Fox pub is excellent. Big thumbs up!
