The Welldiggers Arms

Petworth, Sussex

A well-heeled roadside inn with long lovely views over the South Downs: fresh bedrooms, modern British food & excellent walks abound

14 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

A true country classic where the views stretch for miles and the staff are warm, friendly and attentive. The kitchen turns out delicious modern British dishes; start with duck hash, hen’s egg and crispy bacon crumb followed by pan-fried hake with spiced lentils and pot-roasted cauliflower and fennel. Finish up with a moreish pudding and coffee. Or just pop in for a drink and a bar snack: the large convivial space is full of happy diners making the most of the knock out views over the South Downs. The bar and dining area of this 300-year-old stone, slate-roofed inn has a fresh yet traditional feel: roaring fire, bespoke oak furniture, local art. Drink in the picture-perfect vistas or spill onto the terrace. And they’ve got 14 en suite bedrooms, some in the pub and some in a separate courtyard. The calm contemporary rooms have top quality Hypnos beds with attractive upholstered headboards; and all of them make the most of the scenery, while some windows frame spectacular views. Excellent walking all around; Chichester, sailing and National Trust properties are close.

Picture perfect location, exceptional service from all the staff and our room was beautiful with a copper bath at the end of the bed! The food was outstanding for both breakfast and dinner. We have already planned to return as it's one of the loveliest places we have ever stayed in.
