An extraordinarily beautiful setting in the South Downs with views all the way to the sea… this pioneering English vineyard (take a tour and discover the story) is an unusual place to stay. Find huge style with a homely feel thanks to cheery Ade. More poshtel than hostel, there are chunky doors, reclaimed oak, bedrooms with luxurious mattresses and small sparkling shower rooms. A fabulous communal sitting room has a roaring wood-burner and books; breakfast (and dinner if you want) is at long tables in the lofty dining room: lovingly cooked and local. Spill onto the courtyard for barbecues, walk straight onto the South Downs Way.

What an amazing place! Adrian made our whole stay very pleasurable and we will definitely stay again. Such a unique setting and excellent quality accommodation. Yummy breakfast and enjoyed sampling the wine from the estate. Perfect events venue also.

A great place for a B&B stop especially if you are walking the Downs and Adrian provides a map so you can't miss it when coming off the mains Downs pathway. Lovely location and such a well-appointed & furnished unique place to stay - even if the room, the smallest bunkbed room for 4, was definitely on the small size. The staff were great, full of advice and really friendly, but beware of other guests who may not be dog lovers and put a dampener on proceedings. The Rathfinny shop in Frictional also worth a visit - and book early for the vineyard tours. Definitely be back for the Sparkling wine.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Georgia Mallinson

  • The “Rathfinny“ View. Just stop near the Estate office and you’ll see it, its breath taking.
  • It’s a short walk up the valley to join the South Downs Way. A long distance footpath and bridleway running along the South Downs in southern England, and is one of 15 National Trails in England and Wales.
  • There are some stunning walks in the area. We have printed walks on the notice board and also some good books on local walks in the lounge. You can hire or buy OS map 123 from us or feel free to ask one of the staff for their favourite walk
  • Cuckmere Valley is a haven for wildlife, from over-wintering wildfowl to colourful wild flowers. Cradle Valley is a wonderful example of the species-rich chalk grassland. This habitat attracts rare and colourful butterflies and plants in summer.
  • Frankie’s Beach Café on Seaford Beach. – fabulous for Coffee & Cake. In the summer, it also has the only sandpit on the Sussex coast, which can accommodate many excited children while you sample the coffee and take in the sea air.
  • We are very lucky to have so many places to visit. Seven Sisters Country Park, Charleston Farmhouse, Glyndebourne, Towner Gallery, Michelham Priory, Newhaven Fort and Lewes Castle are all within easy reach of the Flint Barns.
