The
Experience

This 16th-century inn on the South Downs has won awards and with good reason – a cracking bar, beautiful bedrooms, tasty local food and an excellent array of ales and craft beers. Step inside where all is freshly and carefully made-over with extra space to dine among the many happy locals who gather for a pint of Bedlam, the pub’s own brew. From the spanking new kitchen: menus using meat from Sussex farms, game from local estates, fish from short-range boats – try hay-smoked venison haunch with chervil root, chanterelles and kale, followed by rhubarb and citrus cheesecake with brown butter and Muscat. After dark, the big garden glows with light, fire pits are lit and blankets offered. Upstairs are stylish bedrooms with bags of character. Expect Farrow & Ball colours, chic fabrics, old-style radiators and comfy beds. Bigger rooms have sofas, all have digital radios, flat-screen TVs, rain showers in sparkling bathrooms, and freshly-baked cookies. Bring walking boots and mountain bikes, and scale the Ditchling Beacon for big views. Brighton and Gatwick are close. Don’t miss Sunday lunch.

Local points of interest from Molly Raftery

  • We are placed at the foot of Ditchling Beacon, which has previously hosted the Tour de France, and will this year host the closing stages of the Tour of Britain
  • The Village is within the "South Downs National Park", and is only a few hundred yards from the paths that take you from Winchester to Eastbourne and anywhere in between !!
  • The village High Street is the only "Grade Listed" High Street in Sussex, with most of the buildings dating from either the 16th or 17th century
  • We are directly on the "London to Brighton" cycle route that takes place on Fathers Day every year, with an estimated 50,000 cyclists coming through the village, it's a truly amazing site
  • During the month of May, the village hosts an Artist's Open House's event every weekend. It's part of the Brighton Festival and you can expect to see around 20 venues taking part with over 50 Artists exhibiting
  • We are only 15 minutes drive from Brighton and Lewes, along with several National Trust Estates such as Sheffield Park, Nymans and Wakehurst Place. Not forgetting the Beaches along the South Coast. Hassocks Train Station is only 45mins from Victoria
