What was once a farm building has been reborn as a beautifully-designed nook tucked behind a wooden gate. Inside is brick and flint, with licks of cream paint rising to the oak vaulted ceiling. Bi-folding doors reveal views over Kingley Vale nature reserve and let in plenty of light. You’ll find a welcome basket of local goodies and a bottle of fizz to get you in the mood, and owner Lucy will leave you to it unless you call. It’s a short scramble up a ladder to the mezzanine bedroom (could be tricky for the less nimble, or very tall) with a king size bed and a pair of skylights for stargazing as you snuggle down. The luxurious bathroom has a rainfall shower (with room for two!), underfloor heating and a heap of fluffy towels. It’s only a mile to the White Horse at Chilgrove or Royal Oak at Lavant (a Tatler favourite), or prep a cosy sofa-supper at home. Sunset is perfect from the sheltered deck where it’s nicely peaceful apart from the odd traffic hum at busy times. Motorsport enthusiasts and foodies can be at Goodwood in minutes, or just wander straight out into the idyllic Sussex countryside.
