Deep in the High Weald, down a maze of country lanes, is an enchanting 1650s house in eight acres of heaven: Jill’s pride and joy. Inside: oak beams, stone fireplaces, big sofas, and a Jacobean dining room with leaded glass windows, fine setting for a perfect English breakfast. Wing chairs, floral fabrics, dressers with china bowls: the country-house feel extends to the comfortable, carpeted bedrooms. Discover Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, Rye… return to sweeping lawns,  wild gardens, ancient apple trees, a woodland walk (spot Titania and Oberon) and a delightful nursery and tea room run by Jill’s son.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Jill Cunningham

  • Legend has it that the house is named after King John of France who was thought thought to have been held prisoner here in 1356 with a ransom set at 3 million crowns
  • Nearby are the stunning gardens of Pashley Manor which holds annual tulip and rose festivals. Batemans, the family home of Rudyard Kipling, is in nearby Burwash and many other National Trust properties are within a half mile of King Johns Lodge
