The
Experience

This glorious patch of England is more 1930s than 21st century. You’re on the Beachy Head Estate, with some of the most iconic landscapes of the south east on your doorstep; Friston Forest, Cuckmere Haven, Birling Gap and those big white cliffs all wait. You can hire bikes, canoe up the river, or just follow paths through blissful country and conveniently pass the odd pub. As for East Dean, Charlie has brilliantly reinvented the estate, and this pretty village with its lovely old pub overlooking the green makes a great base from which to explore. To provide decent lodgings some lovely cottages have come to life, three converted from old brick and flint outbuildings, others rising afresh in the old kitchen garden. They come in different shapes and sizes – two small ones can be taken by the night – but all have the same easy style: airy colours, smart kitchens, squishy sofas and comfy beds. Doors open onto terraces, you get sparkly bathrooms, crisp white linen and dishwashers to do the work. There’s a lovely deli on the green, a butchers in the village and you can eat at the Tiger Inn, a one-minute stroll.

Reviews

We stayed in Fig Cottage which was ample size for four people. The cottage was well decorated, clean and well laid out. The kitchen was well equipped. This is a great location, the garden is lovely and we had a table and chairs on our patio for dining outside to admire the view. I would highly recommend these cottages to anyone wanting to stay in this part of East Sussex. The village is pretty and there is a good pub and excellent deli cum cafe in the village.
