Wine importer Gerry Price pulls the punters in from all over Surrey. Inside, the stylish bar area is light and modern with wooden floors and Shaker colours while the atmosphere’s warm and friendly: monthly quiz nights; Sunday evening music sessions; summer barbecues in the garden. There are local beers – hand-pumped Fuller’s and Young’s – and the wine list is enticing, with a nod to Portuguese shores. Tuck in to lunch or dinner in the bar, or in the more traditional dining room. Seasonal menus announce fresh modern food, perhaps game casserole, or pan roasted cod in a mussel cream sauce. In autumn, there’s pheasant, woodcock and teal. A pastry chef oversees the crumbles and tortes with South African vinegar pudding a house speciality, and the cheeses are farmhouse best. As for dogs, they’re welcome in the bar – and in a couple of the rooms in the stable block behind (replete with clock tower). Enjoy modern oak beds with Hypnos mattresses, excellent wifi, swish wet rooms, even gun cupboards and safes. Breakfast is the final treat.
