The Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa

Lavenham, Suffolk

600-year-old timber-framed building with roaring fires, ancient beams, lovely staff and a cute bar. Smart bedrooms are a treat

45 rooms

Rooms sleep 1 - 2

This medieval inn has never looked better. It’s a spectacular tangle of ancient timbers and sagging beams, with roaring fires, soaring ceilings and lovely staff, who weave through the throng, delivering sinful plates of afternoon tea or cocktails before supper. Potter about and find a minstrel’s gallery in the vaulted dining room, a fabulous old bar that was a favourite haunt of WWII airmen, then a courtyard garden, where you can stop for a glass of Pimm’s in summer. As if that wasn’t enough, a beautiful new spa has recently appeared: you’ll find six treatment rooms, a sauna and steam room, then sunbeds encircling a vitality pool on the terrace; sheer bliss. As for the stylish bedrooms, some are vast with four-posters and timber-frames, others more contemporary with cool colours and sofas. All have comfy beds, crisp white linen, robes in fancy bathrooms, while beds are turned down during dinner. There’s an open-plan brasserie for lighter bites, then a 14th-century hall for weddings. As for Lavenham, it’s one of the best preserved medieval towns in the land. Bury St Edmunds is close, too.
