The
Experience

The rise of the cool country inn continues apace and the Packhorse is a prime example, a beautifully renovated country pub rescued from neglect. It’s a small-scale pleasure dome – stylish interiors, ambrosial food, beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms – yet it remains a village local with a bar that welcomes all. The downstairs is open plan with a fire that burns on both sides and the odd armchair to take the strain. You’ll find varnished floorboards, lots of art, lamps hanging above a cool bar. Chic bedrooms are scattered about. Coach house rooms have a warm rustic elegance, those in the house are a little fancier, a couple with baths in the room; all have fantastic bathrooms. Irresistible food waits below, maybe truffled goat’s cheese with quince and figs, Suffolk venison and kidney pudding, plum tarte tatin with fruit-cake ice-cream. There’s a terrace for good weather, then a private dining room that can turn into a meeting room. This is prime horse-racing country: Newmarket is three miles west, the peerless Frankel is at stud nearby. Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds are close.
