The
Experience

What do you want when you sneak off for a couple of days away? A small city steeped in history, beautiful country waiting beyond, a welcoming hotel with attractive bedrooms and excellent food? The Northgate – recently renovated from top to toe – offers all that and more. It’s small and sits 500 metres from Abbey Gardens, the crown jewel of medieval Bury St Edmunds. Inside, the welcome is as warm as the water that pours from your power shower. Downstairs, the cocktail bar doubles as a sitting room, doors open onto a terrace for lunch in the sun, a well-kept garden waits beyond. Bedrooms above have a contemporary country-house feel: cool colours, smart wood furniture, pretty throws on  beds that come with cool bedheads. Bathrooms are just as good: some have walk-in showers, two have freestanding baths in the room, all are excellent. As for the food, it’s on tap all day: breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea, then a delicious dinner, perhaps mackerel with apple and parsnip, rump of mutton with water chestnuts, an irresistible banana soufflé. Cambridge and Newmarket are close.

Local points of interest from Nick Bridges

  • • The town centre became the burial place of King Edmund in 903. It grew around the remarkable Benedictine Abbey that was destroyed on the orders of Henry VIII. The Abbey Gardens are based around the ruins and are situated only a few minutes walk away.
  • • Ickworth House is located in Horringer a few miles drive away. A Georgian Italianate palace in an idyllic English landscape managed by the National Trust.
  • • In the town centre is Suffolk’s St Edmunds Bury Cathedral, established in 1914 with the astonishing tower created in the early part of the 21st century to mark the Millennium.
  • • The Theatre Royal is the only Regency Theatre. Built in 1819, it is the only theatre owned by The National Trust.
  • • Located at the heart of the town is Britain’s smallest pub, The Nutshell with a bar that measures just 15ft by 7ft, The Nutshell proudly holds the title of smallest pub in Britain as confirmed in the Guinness Book of Records.
  • • Newmarket, the home of flat horse racing is just 12 miles down the A14 where our sister pub The Packhorse Inn is located in the village of Moulton.
