The
Experience

The ingredients here are simple. Take a medieval wool town trapped in aspic, add a 15th-century merchant’s house that overlooks the square, then whisk up the best food in Suffolk and you have one of the loveliest restaurants with rooms in the land. It sits opposite the Guildhall, its Georgian façade giving way to original interiors, where timber frames and old beams mix beautifully with light colours and varnished wood floors. A Suffolk institution for 30 years, it is French to its core, with a cheese board to beat all others. You eat in the airy dining room with an ancient fireplace in one corner, perhaps crab and prawn ravioli with lobster bisque foam followed by guinea fowl roulade with black tiger prawn mousse, then grapefruit and champagne Baba with marjoram cream. Bedrooms are just as good: timber frames, wonky floors, beautiful beds, a sofa is there’s room. You’ll find decanters of sherry, coffee machines, flat-screen TVs, robes in chic bathrooms. Four are huge, one has a regal four-poster, another a 14th-century fireplace in its bathroom. There’s a courtyard for breakfast in the sun, too.
