The
Experience

The Anchor is one of those lovely places that has resisted the urge to be precious. This is a cool little seaside inn where relaxed informality reigns; kids are welcome, staff are friendly, dogs fall asleep in the bar. You’re 500 yards from the sea with a terrace that fills with locals in summer and lawns that run off towards the water. Inside, beautiful simplicity abounds – Cape Cod meets English country local. You get books everywhere, beautiful art, roaring fires, a happy vibe. The big draw is Sophie’s lovely food. Game and venison come from local estates, fish and seafood from nearby waters, samphire and sea kale are foraged along the coast. Bedrooms fit the mood perfectly. Those in the house are warm and homely; garden rooms are big and airy with sofas inside and terraces that overlook nearby dunes. Don’t miss dinner, perhaps fish soup, game ravioli, chocolate fondant with caramel ice cream. You wash it all down with Mark’s legendary collection of bottled beers and fancy wines. There are festivals by the score – don’t miss Latitude or Folk East. Starry skies amaze. Unmissable.

Local points of interest from Mark & Sophie Dorber

  • Two crackling log fires in our bar & family room, makes the pub super warm and cosy. Large restaurant filled with art from local artists, Walberswick has a fine group of accomplished artists. Our heated flint barn for events & private dinners.
  • We have 3 terraces to enjoy food & drinks in warm weather, looking out to the sand dunes and you can hear the sea. Our outside wood fired oven for pizzas, slow roasting & smoking food such as salmon. Street food style food on Sundays in Summer.
  • Fantastic bird watching: oyster catchers, avocets, marsh harriers, barn owls, night jars. The reedbeds are on our doorstep.
  • A 20 minute walk to Southwold Harbour or catch the Walberswick ferry - a rowing boat operated by local lass Danni Church & her team. This ferry has been in her family for 5 generations.
  • 400 yards from the stunning beach, sand dunes and reedbeds. Super walk to Dunwich along the beach & back through the woods.
