Meg’s Cottage

Ducks, rare-breed sheep and wonderful views for this super family cottage high on the moors. Hop to Buxton for antiques, shops, theatre

2 bedrooms

Sleeps 4

A gorgeous setting for a pretty cottage that hunkers down on the edge of a conservation village, high on the moors, close to the Manifold Valley. Climbers and walkers will be in heaven, as will dedicated explorers: heaps of National Trust properties are close by, there are the market towns of Ashbourne and Leek, and the spa town of Buxton too. Enter an open-plan space decorated in modern country style, with heated flagstoned floors, new oak beams, interesting art and good antiques. The kitchen is bright, compact and beautifully designed. You eat at an oak table topped with a Peruvian cloth, in a cosy alcove painted Delft-blue and cream, and lounge on leather sofas with tapestry cushions. The bedrooms are roughly the same size with sloping ceilings, simple furniture and the odd splash of colour from cushions and throws. Bathrooms, set into the roof line with no windows, are attractive and well laid out with pretty mosaic tiles, slate floors and pounding showers. You are on a working farm with rare-breed sheep and pottering ducks and hens – and wonderful unfettered views.

Me, my husband, my Mum and our two dogs stayed here for a week at the beginning of August 2018. The cottage is delightful, beautifully converted, and fully equipped. Both bedrooms were airy and very comfortable, and both had en suite shower rooms, which we found especially helpful. The kitchen has everything you could require, and the living area was homely and very comfortable. The garden was secure for our two dogs and the views across the valley were stunning. The cottage is quiet and secluded, and we adored the Valais Blacknose sheep and the horses. Could not recommend highly enough.
