The
Experience

What makes a great little inn these days? The Devonshire Arms has all the ingredients: lots of style, good prices, a community feel, some lovely rooms. It’s in the right place, too, bang on the village green, with a terrace at the front, a garden at the back and a courtyard in between. Inside, is just as good. This isn’t one of those places where every table is laid up for food; on the contrary, the best seats in the house are in the bar – a couple of armchairs in front of the fire. Step inside and find stylish interiors throughout. You get painted panelling in the restaurant – a sort of contemporary take on an 18th-century gentleman’s club – then cool colours in the bar, where you can grab a pint of Butcombe, then spin outside to watch village life pass by. Lovely rooms have terrific prices. You’ll find good beds, white linen, pretty furniture and excellent bathrooms; one has a free-standing bath. Elsewhere, red leather banquettes, fresh flowers, kind staff, the daily papers. As for the food, it’s just the ticket: local partridge, fillet of bream, treacle tart with buttermilk ice cream.

Reviews

2nd time of staying here some five or so years apart and not disappointed. Comfortable and attractive rooms, interesting, good food and good choice of menu but especially very welcoming and pleasant staff. Excellent location for N.T houses and gardens-just the place for short holiday. Attractive veg and herb garden since last visit.
