Maunsel House

Taunton, Somerset
Bed & Breakfast

Your gast will never be as flabbered again. Come if you are bright and fun and intrigued by eccentricity and beauty

19 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 – 22

There’s so much to blurt out it’s tricky to start. Let’s begin with eccentric owner Ben, 7th Baronet, who has restored the family pile and is (incidentally) looking for the perfect provider of an heir. Beware, you must jump through hoops! The house is packed with history, furniture, guns, swords, stuffed animals, hats, surprises, nudes in the loos, books, board games and roaring fires. It’s completely bonkers and huge fun and you must immediately get together a group and flock here for winter shenanigans. Couples alone will probably end up in one of the annexe rooms – perfectly comfortable, but not as mind-boggling.

Absolutely unique experience! I am glad to see you feature this fabulously eccentric and beautiful old pile. I didn't book through yourselves for this one but came across it looking for other venues. The rooms in Maunsel are crammed with character and the bar has to be the most eclectic bar in the country. Breakfast was excellent and the staff are very friendly. I will definitely stay there again but this time I will book through yourselves, promise!

Local points of interest from Ben Slade

  • Most of Maunsel House is Elizabethan, but there are parts of the Main House that predate 1066.
  • Some very important people have been to Maunsel House over the years. It has been documented that even Alfred The Great stayed here.
  • Glastonbury Tor is just over 18 miles away from Maunsel House. Do visit this sacred site if you get the chance... the views across the Somerset Levels are simply fantastic.
  • If you fancy an afternoon of retail therapy then you might like to visit Clarks Village in Street. You will find a wonderful selection of shops including Hotel Chocolat, Gap Outlet and Frankie & Benny's.
