The
Experience

Linda has softened this rambling 1790 house; it has an upbeat elegance. The rooms are sunny and sparkling with beds and windows dressed in delicate fabrics in fine contrast to solid antique pieces. One condition of Linda’s moving to her husband Charles’s family home was that she should be warm! She is, and you will be, too. An excellent breakfast sets you up to walk the grounds and explore the garden where Charles’s mother Mary, 85, oversees all, and can often be seen cutting grass on her tractor. Charles and his son-in-law Adam, a trainee arborist, maintain the mature trees and shrubs. There are 70 acres of woods, lawns and gardens, including a two-acre walled garden. You will find a folly, ice house, waterfall, ha-ha, a lake with an island… and a quarter mile of daffodils. From the South Lawn with its sculptural trees, a drive encourages a stroll towards a lily pond, and an avenue of pleached limes. There are climbing roses against the boundary wall, a fragrant, paved garden created by Penelope Hobhouse, and some unusual trees including a catalpa and a tulip tree. Come for teas on the lawn and perfect peace.
