Exmoor National Park wraps itself around this hotel, which sits in glorious countryside. Roy and Gaynor supply maps for gentle rambles and invigorating hikes from the door: an hour’s walk along the rugged coastal path takes you down to Porlock Weir which teems with wildlife and birds.
Return for afternoon tea in the medieval courtyard on sunny days: west country clotted cream, homemade scones, champagne if you want. On chillier days take tea round the roaring fire. Dinner is a relaxed affair with a hand picked wine list and the best of local produce. The Luttrell Arms (six miles) is good.
Sleep deeply in peaceful bedrooms; there are four, each with a smart en suite. Fill up with big breakfasts served in the dining room before another day exploring Exmoor. Dunster Castle is six miles – there are plenty of challenging and gentle cycle routes, and a barn for storing muddy gear and bikes.
