Wren's Nest Cottage

Ludlow, Shropshire

A simple cottage in peaceful pasture, perfect as a romantic hideaway or snug family retreat - plenty of walks and Ludlow within reach

4 beds

2 bedrooms

Sleeps 4

Head deep into the Shropshire countryside along an old farm road lined with hedges, and suddenly the land drops away to reveal the Rea valley. Grazing sheep and the nearby Jacobean manor house add up to a scene that hasn’t changed much in a hundred years. Originally for estate workers, Wren’s Nest sits on a slope, painted white and surrounded by green – no real garden but with lovely field and valley views from the front and terrace. Inside it’s cosy and more than a touch old-fashioned, but renovated with underfloor heating in the bathroom. Cook on an electric cooker or wood-burning range; the range also provides heating and hot water, and there’s a wood burner in the sitting room with plenty of logs. Above are two snug bedrooms – a double plus a twin with en suite loo – both share the modern bathroom downstairs. The owners are in the big house if you need them, and can organise shooting or fishing if that’s your bag. Pull on wellies for long walks from your doorstep, an hour through woods to a pub or to the small market town of Cleobury Mortimer. By car you can explore Ludlow, Ironbridge and the Malverns.

I love this house. I love its lack of tele + wifi – partly why we chose it – and I love its lived-in-ness + its aesthetics.

It's impossible not to feel relaxed at Wren's Nest- it has everything....except wi-fi, which was a huge positive for us, as we stayed up playing games in the cosy sitting room beside the wood-burner. The cottage is extremely secluded We enjoyed exploring the woods and loved the fact that we could see the children playing in the fields from the cottage. The local farmer invited us to try carp fishing in a lake on the estate, which was a fantastic experience. Recommend the friendly pub Live & Let Live in Neen Sollars and walks in Carding Mill Valley. We hope to return.

Wren's Nest Cottage is a most charming and secluded cottage in the heart of the Shropshire countryside. It is delightfully cosy with a wood burning stove and has a wonderful aspect across the valley towards the river Rea. It has been furnished in a sensitive and considered manner with a well-equipped kitchen and many thoughtful touches throughout. We cannot wait to go back.

Two of us holed up here for three days but would have happily stayed longer. It's a completely unspoiled spot, with just the sound of a river rushing at the bottom of the field. There was a good supply of logs, which we were able to stock up from the shed – very necessary in the cold weather, and once we got the hang of the wood-burner we kept it well-fed (the radiators feed off the fire; a bit of work involved but curiously satisfying getting back to nature!). Coming back to a fireside kitchen supper after a good walk was the dream. Highly recommended for lovers of the properly rural!
