The Experience

You’re near to Offa’s Dyke for challenging walks – and a new cycle trail which circles the route – but there are comfy armchairs to collapse into and a big log fire when you get back. With books on the shelves, flowers from the garden and a basket of homemade things to eat, this place feels like home.

Tucked off the High Street with a south-facing garden, the light-filled cottage has views across the rooftops to woods and hills. In spring and summer you can pick up the scent of lilac and roses. In winter, sit in the sun room and watch the weather.

Bishop’s Castle is an understated gem, with six pubs, two breweries, many independent shops, and a farmers’ market on the third Saturday of the month. The kitchen has all the stuff you need but if you fancy a night off, you can eat well at the historic, atmospheric Castle Hotel.

Reviews

We had a lovely stay with our dogs. Bishop’s Castle is a surprisingly quirky and interesting town. The cottage is in a superb location at the top of the town, right in the heart of things. We happened to catch the end of the Arts festival with all the events and open studios. The cottage is really spacious and comfortable and we made good use of the wood burner. We went during the time of the storms but had some good days. We hope to come back again in warmer months to enjoy sitting outside on the patio with those views over to the hills.

Bishop's Castle is a lovely little historic town, and this was an ideal place to be based in it. The cottage is on a small road, but we found no problem in parking right outside. The house was beautifully decorated and furnished, and very warm and comfortable. Rachael was very helpful and prompt in responding to a couple of queries we had. On arrival we found she had left us some very useful basic supplies and a very nice fruit loaf. No hesitation in recommending.

Bishop's Castle is a little gem of a town, vibrant, artsy and surrounded by glorious countryside. Stay in this charmingly renovated cottage and be at the very heart of it all and yet still enjoy peace in the very pretty south-facing garden with views to the hills. A rare treasure.

Excellent, comfortable and stylish cottage with lovely views over the town and surrounding hills. We had a wonderful week alternating walks (some from the door using the local leaflets provided) with trips to Ludlow, Presteigne and Hay-on-Wye. Bishop's Castle is an understated delight - quality real ale in the two town breweries, book and antique shops, and a small deli as well as supermarkets. We hope to return!

Carole, Denbighshire

Lovely cottage in an excellent location. We stayed in deepest winter but the cottage was well heated and there was a bonus of a log burner in the lounge. The cottage was very comfortable with a light and bright kitchen & dining room. We really appreciated the little extras from Rachael - like the delicious cake and apple juice. The cottage is well located in Bishops Castle with easy walking access to the pubs (and 2 breweries!) and shops. We used the cottage as a base to do some excellent walks on the Long Mynd and Stiperstones. Highly recommended overall.

Steve, Corsham

Tudor Cottage is an excellent base for exploring Bishop's Castle - very comfortable, even in depths of winter, with a nice "sun room" area adjacent to the kitchen where we could sit and watch the snow fall! The cottage is well equipped and has good kitchen facilities. There is a very easy to use wood-burning stove should you visit in the winter. The location was ideal, at the top end of the town, with excellent pubs/restaurants within 2 minutes walk of the front door. Would recommend.

Location

The neighbourhood

Bishop’s Castle is a small market town close to the Welsh border, and everything you need is a stroll away, including book and antique shops and the Three Tuns, the oldest working brewery in Britain (you can eat well there too). Clun, five miles, is an even smaller town, and very picturesque, with an ancient packhorse bridge and a Norman castle. The Shropshire Hills teem with glorious walks; the Long Mynd, Offa’s Dyke and Carding Mill Valley are a 10-13 mile drive.

Local points of interest from Rachael Kennedy

  • Walking: Offa`s Dyke, South Shropshire Hills, provide an endless variety of walks. Details of walks from the town are available at Tudor Cottage, alongside maps.
  • Visitor Attractions: Bishop`s Castle has revamped the town hall providing excellent tourist information. Stokestay, Ludlow and Powis Castles, Acton Scott (BBC 2 `Victorian Farm`,) & Berrington Hall(N.T.) are all close by.
  • Great places to eat; Rachael can provide a home cooked meal for you to pop in the oven, local pubs within walking distance, include The Three Tuns. Ludlow is 30 mins. away, well known as a `foodie` destination!
  • Birdwatching: Cardingmill Valley (N.T.) and Bury Ditches Hill Fort are well known spots.
  • Festivals: Bishop`s Castle hosts a variety of festivals including the May & Michelmas Fairs, and the Christmas Lights Festival. Ludlow has its Arts Festival in June/July and its Food Festival in September.
  • Gardens: Besides Tudor Cottage`s own delightful garden! The gardens at Powys Castle, followed by a visit to The Dingle Nursery at Welshpool make a super day out.

Introducing

Rachael Kennedy

Warm friendly Rachael and her mother live locally, restored the cottage in 2005/6, and won a local Best Renovation award. Long involved in conservation, Rachel was once housekeeper for the royal palaces; "now I concentrate on smaller ones!” Her mother designed the much-admired garden, while Rachel rustles up meals from local produce; just ask. Guests often say they feel Tudor Cottage is more of a home than just a holiday cottage and that is the atmosphere she wants to create.
