The
Experience

In the tiny hamlet of Buckton find a long, low, creeper-covered house with all the essential ingredients for a fabulous house party: a drawing room both grand and relaxed with faded cheery sofas, ancestors lining the walls and a fire roaring away; a massive dining room with lovely china and glass and a piano in the corner; an Aga-warmed kitchen with two dishwashers, a booze fridge and a cocktail cupboard… What could possibly go wrong? Upstairs are colourful bedrooms which major on comfort (old-fashioned in a ‘staying with your much-loved eccentric aunt’ sort of way) with masses of books, antiques, pictures and a rocking horse. It’s all pure aristocratic bohemia – so if you abhor clutter this isn’t for you – but imaginative souls will adore the privilege of being among so many family treasures with real history and stories. Owners Henry and Carolyn live in the cottage next door, on-site but not in sight. They leave you homemade cake and apple juice from their own trees, and they’ll light the fire, and dam the stream for you in summer to create your swimming pool, and greet you warmly – then its all yours you lucky things.
