Rooms sleep 2

Drive through the lodge gates, down the woodland drive, over the burn, and there is the house: big, beautiful and Georgian. Katie, the loveliest of hosts, greets you with a pot of tea, a homemade cake and a chat – in the garden on sunny days or in the drawing room by the fire. The gardens are charming, the setting is magical. As for the bedrooms, they’re spacious and comfortable, with baths to wallow in and views over manicured lawns. Wander the grounds as the sun begins to set or hop in the car for the Barrasford Arms; it’s two miles. The house stands alone in beautiful countryside, so ask Katie for maps: foot paths criss-cross this wild land. Browse the lovely market town of Hexham and the Roman town of Corbridge (ten miles). Not much further is Housesteads Roman Fort, part of Hadrian’s Wall…  the walk from here to Steel Rigg is stunning.

As others have already reported Katie is the perfect host(ess) making us feel at home instantly, a log fire , a very welcome cup of tea and cakes, a most comfortable and quiet night followed by a splendid breakfast just what we wanted. The only sadness was staying for one night... we will return and if you are reading this Katie thank you again.

Nigel, Banbury

I booked to stay at the Hermitage for 2 nights with my sister who lives in Edinburgh. We needed to chat over some family things and this looked to be the perfect quiet retreat for our purpose. We really fell on our feet - as mentioned in earlier reviews, Katie could not have been kinder or more generous with her time, delicious breakfasts, tea and cake etc etc. The Barrasford Arms provided delicious dinners just round the corner too. No time this visit to do more than a little exploring which will necessitate returning another year and this will be a much anticipated visit!

After our two-night stay at The Hermitage we felt as refreshed as if we’d had a week’s holiday. Katie was such a warm and kind hostess - helping us with our bags, cooking delicious breakfasts, recommending very good local restaurants and booking tables for us, nothing was too much trouble for her. We loved coming back to tea, cake and a friendly chat after our day’s outings. The house is beautiful, with a lovely garden to wander in, and so peaceful - all we heard was birdsong. We slept really well in our pretty, comfortable bedroom complete with home-grown sweet peas. We would love to go back!

My third stay at The Hermitage was as comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable as my previous visits. Katie's delightful home is an oasis of calm and tranquility, the only sounds are the dawn chorus, birdsong and the calls of the owls. Katie is the ultimate hostess, welcoming, thoughtful, considerate and informative. She is happy to impart/share her wealth of knowledge of local places and events and goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure your stay is perfect, you want for nothing. Her breakfasts are wonderful, delicious homemade marmalades, jams and local honey. A truly special place to stay.

Paula, Exeter

I highly recommend The Hermitage. This was my second stay with Katie who always gives you a very warm welcome. Cosy and very clean rooms, comfortable beds, constant hot water to relax in a roll top bath. Lovely sitting room with a log fire where Katie, an attentive hostess, serves you with afternoon tea. Excellent breakfast with dietary requirement catered for. I will definitely stay here on my next visit, it must be the best accommodation in the area if not in Northumberland. Thank you Katie for looking after me so well it felt like being at home.

Patsy, Peterborough

Wonderful place to stay. Bedrooms are spacious and comfortable; hostess Kate is delightful, very helpful AND she provides a delicious breakfast. The garden is charming and the surrounding parkland is an excellent place for a walk. Do go!

A wonderful place to stay, within easy reach of Hadrian's Wall, but quiet and in a stunning setting. The welcome is warm, and our hostess was so helpful, not only producing tea by the fire and delicious breakfasts, but full of useful information on local sites, travel and pubs to eat at. Nothing was too much trouble. One of the all-round best places I've ever stayed in the UK (and for a very good price). Thank you Katie - and Sawdays for putting us in touch.

Outstanding B and B. Wonderfully well looked after in beautiful setting

David and judy, Oxted

If ever there was a five star bed and breakfast, this is it. A most beautiful house set in magnificent grounds, a most kind and generous hostess, extremely comfortable rooms and an excellent breakfast left me with a sense of well being and a strong desire to return.

Peter, Henley-onthames

My father wanted to celebrate his 80th birthday with a family walk along a section of Hadrian's Wall. We wanted a house that could hold the family, was close to Newcastle and nearby to Vindolanda. Katie helped plan the weekend by answering emails quickly and recommending places to eat. On our arrival, from different directions, help was immediately offered to take bags up to the large and comfortable bedrooms. A pot of tea with cakes was served in front of a log fire. Breakfast was delicious. Before we left, Simon took a family photograph to record memories of a very happy weekend.

Bianca, London

A warm welcome from Katie, who made us feel at immediately at home in a very special place. Charming house in a charming location, great breakfasts, much appreciated advice from Katie about good pub restaurants, places to visit and scenic routes to take. We had a most enjoyable and relaxing time at the Hermitage.

John, Carshalton

We were made to feel very welcome. On arrival tea and homemade cake offered in cosy sitting room with open fire, just what was needed after a long journey. Katie made us feel very welcome in her home, the breakfast was delicious with an excellent service. Extremely quiet location and comfortable beds, we could not fault anything and would highly recommend staying at The Hermitage.

A really special place to stay, with a great welcome from our hostess. We were made to feel very much at home, and loved having breakfast on the terrace, looking at the lovely garden. Katie was very helpful giving us advice about a one-way walk along Hadrian's Wall.

We have just stayed for three nights in this elegant, comfortable and peaceful home. Katie is a perfect hostess, and made us feel that we were welcome guests in her lovely, spacious home. She strikes exactly the right balance between attention to detail and allowing her guests privacy and space. The setting is glorious and the house is well positioned for visits to Kielder, Hadrian's Wall etc. This is a real find and we would certainly return.

We loved it. Katie Stewart is the perfect hostess-warm, welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Room I was v comfortable with a huge Vivtorian bath & lots of hot water. house & grounds magnificent in countryside and within close reach of many delights of Northumberland

Delightfully located well off public roads in mature parkland. Only birdsong breaks the quiet. Spacious bedroom and bathroom, delicious breakfasts and tea to greet you. Wonderful hospitality and great attention to detail. Thank you for it all!

A stunning place, set on a private estate near Hexham, beautifully kept and extremely comfortable. katie and Simon are warm and welcoming, and touches such as turning down the beds, putting on an electric blanket seem second nature to Katie. Delicious breakfast, tea and coffee in the room, large and warm bedrooms and bathrooms and a genuinely cosy atmosphere. Daffodils and wood anenomes cover the banks up the drive.Definitely one of the nicer places we have stayed, and that includes hotels.

What a charming and pleasant place to stay, far from the plastic anonymity of most lodgings that confront today's travellers.

What a hostess! Log fire/tea/cakes at the end of the day for 3 walkers over a w/e stay in addition to a bootdrying/sock washing service! A lovely home in a beautiful setting

The Hermitage is a perfect bed and breakfast: beautiful house; charming setting; (perfectly) quiet and very comfortable room; excellent breakfast. Not to mention details like water by the bed, Emma Bridgewater tea tray, properly made (inter-lined) curtains, original Victorian bath. But of course what makes it really special is the welcome and attention to detail provided by the owner Katie Stewart. Beyond the call of duty were a detailed (and brilliant) direction for a circular walk on nearby Hadrian’s Wall; tea in front of a roaring log fire; a booking made at a nearby restaurant.

The neighbourhood

The house stands alone in a gorgeous estate; you could wander the grounds for hours. The rest of the time there are the remains of the Roman forts to discover and the amazing Hadrian’s Wall, a 20-minute drive. Wallington Hall (Nat Trust, 11 miles) has excellent gardens with marked walks, drop into Alnwick Treehouse for lunch followed by a browse in Barter books, or set off for sandy beaches: they’re an hour away. The countryside is glorious.

Local points of interest from Simon & Katie Stewart

  • We are five miles from the most interesting sections of the Roman Wall with its forts, museums and wonderful walking with stunning views.
  • The Roman Town of Corbridge with its famous bridge over the Tyne, Hexham and its Abbey, both steeped in history.
  • Alnwick Castle and Garden, Cragside, Wallington Hall, Gibside, Belsay Hall and Castle are all within very easy reach, as are Durham Cathedral, Beamish Museum, and Kielder Water.
  • There is an 18 hole golf course at Matfen Hall.
  • Newcastle-upon-Tyne has much to offer, shopping, museums, architecture, The Millennium Bridge, Baltic Art Centre, and of course the fantastic Sage Music Centre, designed by Norman Forster.

Simon & Katie Stewart

Katie, welcoming, thoughtful and kind, is the ultimate hostess. She was born in this house and this is a family affair: her husband Simon and three of her sisters’ families live and work on the estate too. Nothing is too much trouble: she cooks delicious breakfasts, books up restaurant tables and outings, and knows everything there is to know about this marvellous place – and Northumberland.
