Bring the wellies – and jumpers! You are 25 miles from the border and the walking is a joy. Struan and Jenny are good company, love sporting pursuits and will advise on where to eat locally (and drive you there if needed). The sturdy stone house of 1735 is a lived-in, happily shabby-chic kind of place: the en suite bedrooms have fine fabrics and pictures, bathrooms are well-kept and the drawing room has books and choice pieces. Enjoy local bacon and sausages at breakfast, with Struan’s marmalade and bread warm from the oven. The countryside is stunning, Hadrian’s Wall and the great castles (Alnwick, Bamburgh) beckon.
